First off, I'm a writer. A technical writer, but my initial plan was to go into journalism and write for a newspaper. I did it in college (university newspaper, hometown newspaper, and university PR) and wanted to do it for a living, and I loved interviewing people, meeting new people every day, it's a good variety, I guess. But I'm glad life didn't lead me down that path.

One of my friend's (who used to be a newspaper writer but left voluntarily) boyfriend was laid off from his job as an editor. We know another guy who was a graphic designer & got laid off. Two of my friends currently work for Media General, one in the Florence office and one in LC.

The sad thing is that the shortened staff, furloughs, etc- that decreases the paper's quality. If your staff is decreased, downsized, furloughed, etc- the paper will run more stories from the Associated Press (AP). These are free stories that are syndicated from other newspapers. They don't have to pay my friends in the news industry to write these. Less local news is covered, and I think local news is what people really want to read. I don't want to read AP stories, I want to read stuff that people I know wrote, things about Florence (or places close to it). If I want national news, I'll watch TV :).
