One of my favorite things about small town newspapers is always what I call “The Social Column.” You have to know the column that I mean, it is usually written by a little old lady and it goes something like this:
“I was invited to Mary Agnes’ house for a delightful brunch of scones and tea. She had the tea flown in from England just for the occasion. We were celebrating her daughter’s successful graduation from Clemson. I wore my green St. John suit and pearls. Mary Agnes’ house was beautiful, she had a designer come in from Charleston. We used her mother’s Old Master silver and ate on some lovely Wedgwood.”
Now, times are changing. The social column might read a little differently now, but it would still be fun. Facebook actually IS one big social column. So, if you have any social events you would like for me to write about, just send me an email. It can be a church gathering, a Spa Party… whatever.
I envision more like:
“Jenny writes to tell me that her daughter Becca turned 3 this month. She had a fun time celebrating at Fundaygo with all of her buddies from school.
John writes in that he is so proud of his wife Judy for finishing her master’s degree. She worked long and hard and graduated at the top of her class.
So and so church reports that they had 100 people at their fall social. So and so came back from Clemson to attend and announced he was accepted at Harvard Medical School. ”
