Random Thoughts…

  • The person that I always went to for carpet and tile needs went out of business.  A year ago.  I’m sad that I can’t use him anymore, and sad I had no idea about him going out of business.
  • Have you seen the new gym on Second Loop?  It is the “Ladies Only” portion of the Fitness World gym going in the old Winn Dixie on Irby.  I drove by it last night and WOW!  It was full of women running, walking, lifting, etc.  I was very impressed with their turn out, and I think they just opened.
  • Aldi.  I love Aldi.  Have you ever shopped there?  Their store is fascinating to me, and it reminds me more of shopping in Europe.  You have to take your own bags.  You can’t get all of your shopping done there, though you can get a lot done.  I especially love their cheese selection.  For $2.99 you can get a nice romano or havarti cheese… something that would cost more than $4.99 at a regular grocery store.  I love to keep that type of cheese around for snacking while I cook dinner (on the rare occasion that I accomplish that.) You can also get fresh cut flowers for $3.99– and I need fresh cut flowers to bring me out of the winter doldrums.
  • Don’t forget it is time to register for soccer with the County and the YMCA.  County registration ends the 15th and YMCA registration ends the 21st.  Baseball registration starts February 1.
  • The YMCA Father-Daughter dance will be on February 27, 2010.  I Love this idea and will do a whole post on it closer to time.  For now, Tickets are available at the Florence Family YMCA for a minimum donation of $15.  All proceeds will benefit the Florence Family YMCA Partners with Youth and Families Program and the Morning News Newspaper in Education program.  Please remember, this is a special Father and Daughter evening, so no Moms allowed!  (Helicopter moms– this means you.)

I think that is enough random bullet points for today. Maybe.  Check back later and see if I come up with any more.

I LOVE Aldi’s flowers…they are usually beautiful and such a bargain! I went in there a few days ago after a long time of not going and was reminded again how inexpensive things are. You can get almost any food item for under four dollars and usually less than that!

I remember how surprised I was to see an Aldi on this side of the Atlantic after I moved to Flotown. I never was a frequent visitor back in the day, and I have not yet seen our Aldi either.
Thanks for reminding me. I’ll have a look at it soon :)

We do our weekly grocery shopping at Aldi. Yes, you have to put a quarter in the slot on the cart to use one (and take it back when you’re done to get your quarter back). Yes, they do not have bags for free. But you can’t beat their prices! Especially the fruits and vegitables, I got a whole bag of golden delicious apples there for $1.99 the other day, and I got a huge head of cabbage for $.99.

As for the bags thing, just take a handful of your reusable shopping bags. I have several from various shops around town, and we just take them in the store with us in the bottom of the shopping cart.

Oh they do the quarter thing here too? That’s awesome. Yup, if your money is in it they are assured you’ll bring back the cart, and they don’t have to pay for someone to ring in the carts from all over the parking lot. In Europe they make you put in 1 Euro, which equates to roughly $1.50.

Oh how I love Aldi! Interesting to me how so many people seem to turn their noses up at the place, when really it is a hidden gem! This past year I spent tons of time comparing prices and doing the coupon game. I can at times find things cheaper at Harris Teeter when they have triple coupons but otherwise Aldi beats it all. Hamburger for $1.79/lb and great prices on chicken. Their produce is amazing and they often have the cheapest price on milk, eggs, butter and cheese. Can’t say enough good about the place. Some specialty products I have to go other places but for the most part I can find good quality products for my exact need at Aldi. They even have recently started carrying a European brand of facial cleansers and makeup that I love as well.
