Moving to Florence, SC

in Making Florence better

I often get emails from people that are moving and relocating to Florence, SC and have searched google for something related to Florence, SC. I have found that I LOVE these emails. I love helping people understand neighborhoods, schools, things that they may be interested in. This is all done on a one to one basis as I need to know more in depth information about their particular circumstances. However, there is some general information that I am happy to pass along to anyone searching.

A while back I did a post called “Welcome to Florence.” That post deals with how to meet people and how to get involved in Florence.

I have also added a “Realtor” section to the Florence, SC links page. You will need to email me to get added to this list.

The City of Florence and Florence County have two of the best websites I have seen for municipalities. When I look at the websites of other places, I am amazed at how far behind us they are.
There is also information on the Florence, SC Chamber website.

The Florence County website has a section providing general information on Florence, including Climate, population, etc. I also learned that:

In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2007 FLORENCE COUNTY recycled:

71.95 Tons of Glass
393.64 Tons of Metal
4,914.59 Tons of Paper/Paperboard
279.29 Tons of Plastics
104.41 Tons of Used Oil
3.25 Tons of Used Oil Filters
678.67 Tons of Waste Tires

They won’t take my glass though, so I need to research that issue further.

If you are moving here, please email me and ask any questions. I want Florence to grow and be successful and I am happy to give you names of realtors, information on neighborhoods, and any other information that I know.

Hi! More interested in employment information. I’m from Florence, and I’ve learned she’s grown by leaps and bounds! Also what’s the deal with public transportation? How reliable is it?

I take my glass to the dump for recycling. I don’t think the city will pick it up on the side of the road for safety reasons. :(

Chrissy– that may be the ticket. That is good to know though. I am going to make some calls tomorrow, thanks!

Some other information that might be useful to newcomers (forgive me if it’s mentioned in the other post – didn’t see it):

Florence School District One: http://www.fsd1.org
Florence County Library System: http://www.florencelibrary.org
Kids and Company Playgroup – Facebook is the best way to connect with them (my old playgroup when my kids were that age – and they are very welcoming to people new in town): http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=128924150455738&ref=ts

Delphine – I don’t know how reliable the PDRTA buses are, but here is their web site: http://www.pdrta.org/

SCIWAY has a nice page listing some of the local employment resources http://www.sciway.net/jobs/florence.html
Florence has a Craigslist page too: http://florencesc.craigslist.org/
And there’s always Monster.com: http://jobsearch.monster.com/PowerSearch.aspx?where=29501&rad=20&rad_units=miles&tm=60
