Dr. Walter Edgar

in History of Florence

Yesterday we had quite a debate about the proper counties of the Pee Dee Region. Some wanted to include Horry and Georgetown, some sites included Lee and excluded Chesterfield and vice versa. I emailed Walter Edgar to get his thoughts on the subject.

During the more than three decades of his academic career he has written or edited more than a dozen books on the American South and South Carolina; contributed numerous essays and reviews to professional and popular publications; presented professional papers in this country and in Europe; and delivered hundreds of talks to school, civic, and community groups.

(About the Author.)

I received a response early this morning. His response is: “Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon. Florence, Marion, Marlboro, Williamsburg. Historically, Horry has been “The Independent Republic of Horrry” although some might want to include the tobacco-growing regions in the PeeDee. Georgetown has always been historically part of the lowcountry.”

He has a wonderful assortment of books about South Carolina. Here are links to all of the books he has written, there are some great gift ideas and books for summer reading.

(These are also the counties that the Morning News considers to be the Pee Dee.)

Thank you so much, Dr. Edgar!

(Thanks also to Lee County Library for diligently researching the issue yesterday!)

I’m taking SC history at Carolina this fall and my professor is using Dr. Edgar’s book, South Carolina: A History. That will probably end up being one of those textbooks I choose not to try and sell back at the end of the semester!
