Rumors, Openings, and Closings in Florence, SC

by The Flossip on March 5, 2011

in Making Florence better,Openings/Closings/Rumors,Pee Dee Pride!,Places to Eat,Restaurants,Rumors

I am going to update this post as places open, places close and rumors bounce around and I will update when they become reality (if they become reality). By reality I don’t mean that your mama’s cousin works for the XYZ Company and they know for a FACT that it is a Buffalo Wild Wings. I mean, there is actually a sign on the door, wait staff is hired and I can go in and order a meal. Or buy something. Please comment about any rumors of new businesses you have heard or openings or closings. Don’t just comment about any rumors you have heard– this isn’t that type of website!

Ok everyone, I think we need to take matters into our own hands, just looked at a recent report that the population of SC is growing tremendously and I believe we need to inflate our numbers a little. First of all I know in SC it is hard to annex but us as citizens need to be aggressive about it. Currently Florence has a population of 37,000 If you stand in the middle of 5 points from that point and go out 3 miles it says the population is at 68,000, of course not everyone want’s to be in the city but we have enough properties that touch the city limits to get us up close to at least 45,000 or 50,000. With bigger population numbers on paper that means more money and more business types looking at our area. For way too long Florence population was stagnate, it’s time for Florence to grow up!

Academy Sports will be opening April 18th.

Panera, Sweet, Bonefish Grille should be opening closer to June.

11 Bryan March 25, 2014 at 9:34 am

Palmetto Station is being built behind the Food Lion Shopping Center on South Irby, it will be apartment homes. Now that the great recession is ending I fully expect and hope we will be seeing many more construction projects happening around the city.

13 Tim March 21, 2014 at 9:00 am

Anyone else hear/read about the good news coming to Florence? Sound like “Project R” should bring up to 350 new jobs to the area. Company will be located in the Pee Dee Electric Commerce City Industrial Park off 327.

15 Bill March 15, 2014 at 8:32 pm

Starfire is now closed on Saturdays and Sundays and open Monday and Tuesday for lunch only. Also Pho Vietnam on Second Loop is closed until March 25 and will reopen under new management.

16 Tim March 14, 2014 at 2:16 pm

For those on Twitter, Stone Brewing Company twitter handle is @StoneBrewingCo. Go out and follow them, tweet to them that you’d love to have them in Florence, SC. Anything we can do to show them the love.

17 Bryan March 14, 2014 at 10:38 am

Ok everyone we are behind the 8ball Stone Brewery a major brewery is looking to build on the east coast and Florence is looking to lure it the other cities that are trying to get it already have FB pages. I think we need to take community activism to the next level and open up these FB pages to show our enthusiasm. Myrtle Beach have one opened up and Greensboro has one opened up.

23 Fran March 11, 2014 at 3:15 pm

Ok..I rode down Palmetto yesterday on the way home from work. What is that blue roofed building going up on the far corner of 2nd Loop and Plametto. I looked back but don’t remember anyone saying.

Also..all come out to the Lucky Shamrock Fest, downtown Friday night 5-10pm and help out downtown.

27 Tommy Crayton March 6, 2014 at 12:04 pm

How about a nice upscale restaurant that makes everything in house, & makes it well I might add, that’s not a chain & charges accordingly for their services? I could go for that.

28 Ryan March 4, 2014 at 4:20 pm

Trader Joe’s at Ruby’s Corner sounds really good. I could actually envision it. Whether it would happen I don’t know.

29 Bryan March 4, 2014 at 11:20 am

Land is being cleared behind the Food Lion on South Irby St. Does anyone know what is going on at this location?

30 Jacob March 3, 2014 at 9:23 pm

When should the new museum in downtown open? The other buildings have started going up in the new Academy Sports Shopping Complex.

31 Tim March 3, 2014 at 1:15 pm

I see a large plot of land is being cleared at the intersection of 76 and Williston, east of Florence. Any ideas on what might be going there? Looks like a good location for fast food restaurant or convenience store/gas station.

32 Lisapkemmerlin February 23, 2014 at 2:43 pm

Ruby’s corner at Second Loop and South Cashua is available, what should we try to get to go there?

33 Sonny February 21, 2014 at 9:26 pm

I heard Sears was closing at the mall and that HH Gregg is highly interested in that space.

34 Emily February 18, 2014 at 12:47 pm

I might be grasping at straws here, but I know there’s a good group of people on here so I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask.

Does anyone know how to go about getting in touch with the folks that own Roseneath Farms?

Thanks!

35 Becca February 14, 2014 at 2:30 pm

Everybody check out Tubbs Seafood. They are opening across from Allstar Sports. Fresh Seafood and Restaurant!

Locally owned too!

36 Tim February 8, 2014 at 10:30 pm

It looks like the land just beyond Arbor One has been cleared, anyone know what’s planned for that spot?

37 William February 8, 2014 at 3:45 pm

I heard that the Ruby Tuesday at the mall was closing and a Red Robin is coming in it’s place. Does anyone know if that’s true?

38 Jennifer February 7, 2014 at 12:47 pm

Anyone know what is going up on the corner Hoffmeyer and Ebenezer?

39 Fran February 5, 2014 at 3:05 pm

Ok, I’m confused Florence Morning News had Bone Fish Grill, Panera Bread and Chic Fil A as opening in Academy Sports area in the paper last week or week before. Last night on SC news they said 3 restaurants are going to open by Academy but they haven’t released the names yet. So, isn’t SC news up to date or are there going to be 3 more restaurants we haven’t heard about yet? Anyone know?

40 Fran February 4, 2014 at 3:06 pm

Tim..I think I heard a rumor of Rita’s going downtown but really haven’t seen anything concrete. They are going to have to announce soon cause they usually open sometime in February.

41 ronald g February 1, 2014 at 10:29 am

finally have clarification of the new florence crossing center where the academy sports is.
there will be a panera bread, bonefish grill, and yet another chicken fila.

Have we learned where Rita’s is re-opening? Any news there?

43 Tim January 31, 2014 at 8:51 am

Jon, very interesting. It looks like Conn’s is some sort of rent-to-own home furnishing store. Maybe similar to Rent-A-Center?

44 Jon January 30, 2014 at 7:50 pm

Came across this today,….ever heard of a “Conn’s”

45 Fran January 26, 2014 at 5:14 pm

Scott..I saw that in the paper today! Wahoo…Panera Bread! I was really upset when Atlantic Bread closed so this is wonderful news. They haven’t committed to say they are coming but can’t believe the paper could say it if not true.

Does anyone know if Bruegger’s Bagels is coming to Florence? They had job postings on Craigslist for Florence.

49 botoks Kielce January 22, 2014 at 12:15 am

I believe what you posted was actually very reasonable. However,
what about this? what if you were to write a killer
title? I ain’t saying your information isn’t solid, however what if you added a title that makes
people want more? I mean Rumors, Openings, and Closings in Florence, SC is kinda vanilla.

You might look at Yahoo’s front page and note how they write article headlines to get viewers to click.
You might add a video or a pic or two to get people interested
about what you’ve got to say. Just my opinion, it might bring
your posts a little livelier.

I see that the Roma Pizza Oven building on W Palmetto has a Leased sign on it. Anyone have an idea of what my be going there?

52 Michael January 16, 2014 at 11:23 am

@Tim ,That’s just going to be some vacuum cleaners under a canopy for the car wash.

53 steve January 16, 2014 at 5:46 am

I think the first was in Mechanicsburg Pa. With an unfinished furniture store. We used to go quite a bit … I know they franchised but Florence? All new business is good , right?

54 Fran January 15, 2014 at 11:44 am

WOW..Ollies??? That’s a flash from the past! There was one of those in PA when we lived up there and haven’t seen or thought about them since we’ve have been down here, 16yrs!

55 Tim January 15, 2014 at 9:22 am

Any idea what’s being built alongside/in the Snappy parking lot on Evans?

56 Toyo Phong January 14, 2014 at 2:27 pm

So rumor has it that the old Blockbuster on Palmetto may be the new home for a McAllisters Deli?! Can anyone confirm/deny/elaborate?

Website states Ollies is opening in March 2014 at 1920 W Evans Street

59 Jon January 11, 2014 at 1:41 pm

Ollies is probably moving into the old Freds in front of the post office, lot of work on the inside is being done.

60 Jennifer January 11, 2014 at 11:10 am

@Fran… Thanks!! Maybe KFC just closes early?? We’ve tried to go to the one on Evans one night, Irby another.. Both closed. I think it was around 8:30.. Maybe they close at 8?

61 alice January 10, 2014 at 3:39 pm

read in the paper olllies coming to florence..their web sight says feb 19th…gives no address…any word as to where they are moving?

62 Fran January 2, 2014 at 12:50 pm

Michael…thanks, could have fooled me

Ok, the sale sign is up at Rita’s…anyone know where they are moving since they usually open in February?

63 Michael December 31, 2013 at 5:24 pm

@Fran, it is going to be Advance Auto.

64 Fran December 27, 2013 at 12:46 pm

I remember seeing on here that the lot next to Drs Care was going to be an Advance Auto?
I was driving by there last night and I don’t think so. The building is just about up and its all cinder blocks with no windows at all. Just a door. Almost looks like it will be a warehouse of something. Unless they cut windows out when the building is all up?? ;)

65 Fran December 27, 2013 at 12:42 pm

@ Jennifer…the KFC on Irby is open. Got take out last night. Also I’m pretty sure I saw the day before the one on Evans was open too.

66 Bryan December 21, 2013 at 11:34 am

Of course 107 Million would not be enough but it is a beginning, and with other counties contributing along with grants from other sources it could happen.

67 Jennifer December 19, 2013 at 6:36 pm

Did all the KFC’s in Florence close??

68 Tim December 19, 2013 at 2:40 pm

Bryan, I agree the 1 cent tax is good for Florence County and SC in general. However, the $107 million generated would not be nearly enough to build any sort of rail system between Florence and the beach.

I would suggest fixing other infrastructure like roads and bridges as well as widening some of the roads for expected increase in traffic. But, that’s just my opinion.

69 Bryan December 19, 2013 at 11:34 am

I just look at it this way… Florence just passed a one cent sales tax that will generate over 107 Million dollars, just imagine if we were to get that to occur in Marion and Horry County as well Marion county would not generate 107 Million but it would generate and contribute. With less State and Federal funding local communities our finding ways to get things done and this would be a good way to boost the economy and secure our future. It’s just an out of the box idea something that should be looked at.

70 Tim December 19, 2013 at 8:32 am

Hey Brian, a rail system on the surface sounds like a good idea. I don’t know if it is economically feasible but it would be nice. However, why stop there? Why not rail from Greenville to Charleston, Columbia, Florence and the beach?

I think in this political climate it would be a tough sell. It isn’t a small price tag.

71 Michael December 19, 2013 at 7:25 am

@Fran, I think Hardee’s is moving because that corner is too busy. It’s hard to get in and out of Hardee’s (if you have to turn left out of there) during peak hours. That building will be removed and something else will be there soon.

If we’re lucky, it’ll be another payday loan store :)

72 Fran December 18, 2013 at 2:38 pm

Thanks Michael E. ….that’s surprising that they are giving up a corner spot.
Gezz..Hardees and Advance and leaving empty building. Nothing worse than an empty buildings standing. Although I’m assuming Advance Auto is moving. Maybe they are just opening a new place??

Bryan…that would be nice but then you have to take a cab to where ever you want to go once in MB. Could wind up more expensive?

73 Bryan December 18, 2013 at 11:10 am

Our area and state is missing out on a massive opportunity, I know many people don’t want to give up their cars but what if there was a rail system that linked Florence and Myrtle Beach together, you didn’t have to sit in traffic, you could build a parking garage say downtown or off the interstate and make it a straight shot to the beach, cut down the time to get there as well as the stress. I think this needs to be looked at.

74 Michael E. December 16, 2013 at 9:23 am

@Fran I stopped by Taco Bell yesterday and I ask the cashier, she said that Hardees was moving beside them.

75 Fran December 12, 2013 at 2:05 pm

ring sling instuctions…I use IE 10 now and used all the previous ones also with no problems at all!
Not sure what the problem is with yours.

76 Fran December 11, 2013 at 12:35 pm

Ok, the lot next to Taco Bell has been totally cleared and leveled. Still dirt but does anyone know what might be going on there? If it was posted before, sorry, but I didn’t see anything.

77 steve December 10, 2013 at 6:09 am

amen Fran! That is exactly my wife and I. 50s and jeans. love the younger folks but don’t want to be crowded. reasonable food and good beer and friends. not too many tvs. Prime Time was close. Mellow Mushroom is close but still a chain. we keep hoping for the right place …

78 real pee dee news December 9, 2013 at 4:20 pm

Athens has closed.

79 Fran December 9, 2013 at 3:01 pm

Tim, truthfully I’m not sure. My husband and I are 50-60ish years young. We have been in other towns and said we need a place like this in Florence. I would love a “Cheers” type place, casual/friendly bar to go have a couple beers, something to eat, music and if there was room to dance great! Meet and greet old friends and make new friends too. I don’t think it would limit the clientele. Anyone that wants to relax and have a good time would/could enjoy something like that. I’m sure there are mid-late20′s people that don’t always want to dress up to go out. I’m not sure if most the bars around here do/did cater to the younger crowd but it seems that way. I know Alchemely (spelling) did and not that we had tried but you couldn’t get near the place and there were young people piling in. Don’t get me wrong…we don’t mind being with younger, that’s what keeps us young but I don’t want to have to dress up to go out for a few drinks/beer. That is how I feel with Victors too, have to dress up to go there. I’m a jeans person :) Annie’s is great but always busy and not that big. Cactus Jack’s was busy/crazy and I think a younger crowd. The place has to make you feel welcome no matter what your age. Not gear towards a certain age.

As far as nights..if it was conveniently located probably any night could work out, I know Cactus Jacks was busy during the week. We go out to eat other nights besides the weekend so why not a bar/grill. I’m not sure about others in Florence. It might just be more of a w/e thing for them.

80 Marlene December 6, 2013 at 9:22 am

Does anyone know if Athens Restaurant on Celebration has closed, either temporarily or permanently? Tried to go for lunch the past couple of days and there are signs taped to the doors saying “closed” and nothing in the refrigerated case when we peeked in. Any news would be appreciated!

81 Stephanie December 5, 2013 at 3:03 pm

@Tim…. I wanted to take a crack at two of your questions.
Bars: Bar-going is about friendliness, talking and meeting new people. Apple Annie’s is very local. Victor’s is upscale and local. Having a “Cheers” type atmosphere is fine, but that limits your clientele. As far as what could work, I think we are most missing is a place where people in their mid-late twenties and over can dance without grinding or twerking, etc. – the outdoor music is great, but there’s a reason bars are dark – it helps release inhibitions. With the right atmosphere and catered to the right clientele, I think a dance place could do well. I’ve toyed with the idea of a roving dance club for mamas who still got it. We’ll see.
Downtown Suggestions: Green space. A general store, or something with cute touristy junk, an ice cream parlor, a locally-owned bookstore, several more variety retailers and some high traffic businesses (to draw people during weekdays) – banks, realtors, lawyers tend to have consistent traffic. I think downtowns are great for their variety – you want people to “spend a day downtown” or run there to run an errand and then pick up lunch. When Florence residents have visitors, you want them to come to downtown Florence for an afternoon. I think celebrating Florence is important too. There is some interesting civil rights history here, train history, we are getting some great local talent coming out of Florence – highlighting them would be awesome. There seem to be a lot of singers here – a recording studio could be very cool.
Errant thoughts for your perusal. :)
*Stephanie

82 Tim December 5, 2013 at 9:23 am

Fran, why do you think bars can’t/don’t stay open? I’ve often wondered that myself and it has given me pause when I am thinking about opening a pub/bar in the downtown. Do we not have enough “casual” drinkers to sustain a business? Do Florentines just not go out enough? Would a bar be empty on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday? I don’t have the answer but would love to hear from others.

83 Ryan December 4, 2013 at 4:38 pm

I can see why there is nothing in the Cactus Jack’s building. The surrounding area is too run-down and empty, as well. Revitalization needs to take place down there somehow. Honestly, I cannot stand driving down in that area of Irby just because of the boringness.

84 Fran December 4, 2013 at 2:37 pm

Ok..why can’t a bar/grill open or stay open around here.

Guess Southern Latitudes is a thing of the past. Still nothing in the closed down Cactus Jacks and San Jose and Tequilla is still dark and unopened. San Jose has been on the radio, TV and has a billboard and it still stands unopened. Baffles me ;)

85 Lou November 21, 2013 at 11:38 pm

@Michael….well you certainly did an awesome job! Have already started spreading the word. :) Thanks again!

86 Michael November 20, 2013 at 8:17 pm

@Lou Honestly, no. I read your post and it just clicked. I get inside info some times on new construction in Florence, so hopefully I can add some stuff soon !

87 Lou November 20, 2013 at 7:10 pm

Wow @ Michael! Great work! And boy was that fast! lol Tell me the truth, you had already been thinking about it too right? ;)
At first glance, it really looks great! Am going back now to register and look around a little bit but thank you so much!

88 Fran November 20, 2013 at 10:47 am

Re: Seafood on 2nd Loop. I can’t remember the name right now, we saw them set up on 2nd Loop this w/e. They use to be on Freedom Blvd buy Stefano’s on Saturday’s selling under a tent from their van. Unfortunately when we stopped nothing was local and most was frozen.
Think it started with an H? Hubb’s or something like that.

@Lou, if I’m not mistaken, I’ve seen at least one of the guys from Jersey Boys Pizzeria there. I’m wondering if it’s the Jersey Boys guys opening a seafood place?

93 Lou November 18, 2013 at 8:00 pm

I did just hear today that there’s a small seafood place on 2nd Loop. Supposedly they have been there on Saturdays selling fresh seafood but they are now going to be a restaurant too and sell both fresh and cooked seafood. Across from All-Star Sports I believe.

94 Fran November 18, 2013 at 3:15 pm

Rita’s has a sign see you next year at our new location. Anyone know where that will be?

I also see nothing going on at Cactus Jacks so went to Smoky Oak Taproom’s FB page and they haven’t posted anything since January! I posted on it anyway asking if they were coming to Florence :)

I check on here everyday and it is quiet…guess not much going on lately.

95 Michael E. November 18, 2013 at 12:04 pm

New Enterprise on S.Irby St. next to Jumping J’s being built.

96 Lou November 16, 2013 at 2:43 pm

Agree with Bryan. Kinda wish sometimes that we had another board where people could just share information and opinions, etc. Even experiences at local businesses…good or bad. But maybe that’s not an ok thing to do. Might not even be legal. I’m thinking about things like sharing upcoming fundraising information in our area, or promoting needs of local organizations, good sales in the area (like somewhere..I think Pretty ‘n Bliss..was accepting slightly used clothing for those who need it and giving $2.50 off any item in their store for each item of clothing. Posting it would not only promote their effort but promote their business as well.) Or if someone wanted input on the best dentist or the best restaurant or best daycare…that sort of thing. Getting each others thoughts and input. But, I guess something like this could get out of hand too so I don’t know. Just thinking out loud. Thoughts?

97 Bryan November 15, 2013 at 2:13 pm

This board has been very quiet as of lately, there’s no new happenings going on??

98 Tim November 15, 2013 at 9:00 am

@Nick, I’ve heard a Cheddars is going to go alongside the new Academy Sports at the corner of McLeod and Beltline but I do not have 100% confirmation.

99 Nick November 14, 2013 at 9:16 am

is cheddars coming to Florence?

100 Jim November 11, 2013 at 4:02 pm

Blockbuster is closing

101 Tim November 8, 2013 at 2:34 pm

Anyone know what might be happening or being built next to the Taco Bell on Irby by Second Loop?

102 Lou November 1, 2013 at 11:29 pm

Have been told there is going to be a gas station/convenience store built at the intersection of Ebenezer and Hoffmeyer. Can’t remember the name of it but will be the same one that’s currently at the Darlington end of Ebenezer on Hwy 52. That one has a food counter but don’t know if the new one will or not.

103 Bryan October 22, 2013 at 11:44 am

It is true Mcalister’s is building in Florence, well the construction project says renovation so maybe they are going in downtown????

104 Fran October 17, 2013 at 2:34 pm

@Steve…I have been watching and waiting for San Jose Tacos and Tequila to open but still nothing. They were at the Taste of Florence Tuesday, I heard, and won a few Best Of’s.
So maybe that means they will be open soon??

105 steve October 17, 2013 at 6:00 am

Smokey Oak would be Awesome. One of our favorites! we thought the Ockoberfest was well done but only heard about it on Friday. Most of our friends knew nothing of it.
Too bad about Southern Lattitudes and i feel similarly about San Jose Tacos and Tequila : too much drama and no food or drink!

106 Lou October 16, 2013 at 9:34 pm

@Fran….I agree Fran. I don’t think Southern Latitudes is really going to happen. Even if they do finally open, with all the drama of them trying to get started, it doesn’t bode well for how successful it will be. Not a good sign.

As for McAllister’s Deli….that would be great! Hope that’s true.

As for the gas station that’s supposed to go where Percy and Willie’s is now, the poster said there will be a Bojangle’s behind it but I don’t see where it could go with Verizon and Red Bowl there.

107 Paul October 16, 2013 at 8:05 pm

I went with my wife to Octoberfest, saw the “Wiener Schnitzel ” dinner from Victors. I didn’t have it but one of our friends did and enjoyed it. I’m not knocking Victors but in the interest of culinary education I’m compelled to point out the following:

The term Wiener Schnitzel is a protected geographical indication in Austria and Germany and a Schnitzel can only be made of veal.

When pork is used, in Europe it is always called Wiener Schnitzel vom Schwein or Schnitzel nach Wiener Art to differentiate it from the veal original.

In Germany pork is almost always used for schnitzel but again it is identified with specific styles, e.g., Jägerschnitzel (Hunter’s schnitzel): A schnitzel with mushroom sauce.
Naturschnitzel (Natural schnitzel): A peppered and salted schnitzel with no sauce or only a simple sauce (e.g., pan drippings, to which sour cream may be added).
Rahmschnitzel (Cream schnitzel): A schnitzel with a cream sauce, often containing some mushrooms.
Paprikaschitzel(Paprika schnitzel) made with cream sauce flavored with (imagine) paprika

108 Fran October 16, 2013 at 3:48 pm

Nancy I haven’t heard anything about them but would love to have someone take over Cactus Jacks! It really starting to look like its had better days. I was hoping Southern Latitude might take it over but I think they have gone by the wayside. Haven’t heard anything from them since August.

109 Nancy October 16, 2013 at 2:05 pm

Has anyone heard confirmation that Smoky Oak Tap Room is coming to Florence? It’s big in the Charleston area and I had heard that they bought Cactus Jacks.

110 Nancy October 16, 2013 at 1:46 pm

We went to the Florence Oktoberfest and thought it was a great start for Downtown Florence. The lines for buying tickets moved quickly, however, not all the venders were set up for the tremendous response from the Florentines. Dolce Vita had some nice German wines available and there were a good number of beers at the beer/soft drink truck. The Clay Pot did a wonderful job with their ‘german’ specialties and pastries. 1031 American Grill served garlic and herb bratwurst, andouille sausage and hot dogs with some fabulous german mustard, passable sauerkraut and other toppings. They kindly served them as requested by the customer, even when asked to place sweet relish and ketchup on the brats. Victor’s did an interesting take on Wiener Schnitzel (made with pork instead of veal) and plated it beautifully. They also had some good german wines and available beers. The bands were entertaining and even the power glitches did not dampen the spirits of the event goers. The Wiener Dog Race was a huge success, well attended by participants and spectators even though it was almost an after thought! Another great city collaboration with the terrific team at Bravo!

111 Fran October 15, 2013 at 4:54 pm

Oh and one of the vendors with Bratwurst, Hot dogs and all the fixings was from 1031 American Grill. I asked where their place was and he said they are opening next to the Library, what ever that is going to be, on Dargan. Can’t remember if anyone has mentioned them opening before.

112 Fran October 15, 2013 at 4:48 pm

Tim…My husband and I went and met some friends there. I was very surprised and happy to see how many people turned out to support it and I guess it being their first they were too because I heard they were running out of some of the food. The German Band was fun and they got people up to dance and people all brought their dachshunds for the weiner races :) They had another band come on when the German band left but didn’t really stick around that long. So like I said for the first one it didn’t go too bad. If they go for it again next year, maybe they will have a few more vendors was the only thing I could see needed.

113 Tina O October 15, 2013 at 3:32 pm

Does anyone know what’s happening on the corner of Palmetto and 2nd Loop? The building there behind the lawn decorations store has been torn down..

114 Tim October 15, 2013 at 12:35 pm

O’Neil, that’s certainly a positive for Florence if they can pull it off. Anyone else have news to share? Also, did any of you make it downtown last weekend for Oktoberfest?

115 O'Neil October 14, 2013 at 4:06 pm

Florence, along with Mt. Pleasant, Myrtle Beach and three or four other cities, are getting ….drum roll please…MCALISTER’S DELI!

I just confirmed the news with a buddy of mine that’s overseeing their acquisition.

Not sure where, but definitely coming in on the west side.

116 Tripp October 10, 2013 at 6:17 pm

I tried the new Dickey’s restaurant over on 52 in the old Bojangles building today for lunch. I was concerned at first that they weren’t even open because the only sign for the restaurant is on the front of the building and the parking lot wasn’t all that busy (drive-thru was empty). I used a coupon given to me to get a free Big BBQ Sandwich with purchase of a Large Drink. The drink is $2 for 32 oz. and the Big BBQ Sandwich is $5.50. The tea was great, but I wasn’t 100% into the BBQ Sandwich. I had southern pulled pork minus pickles and onions and the BBQ sauce that they gave me to add to my meat wasn’t the normal spicy hot type that I’ve grown up with. It was different, but not sure if it’s something I’ll be all that into down the road.

117 Nancy October 9, 2013 at 4:07 pm

@Tim – RE: downtown retail space – Trader Joe’s or Fresh Market would be a big draw downtown. I’d also like to see a Lowes Food (grocery store) come to Florence but I don’t think that would work in the downtown space.

If we could get a Home Goods downtown, it would also draw a variety of customers.

118 William October 9, 2013 at 11:20 am

Murphy’s Gas station (Walmart’s Gas Station) will be going into the Percy location. Also ANOTHER Bojangles will be directly behind it. Sad times, more fast food.

119 Bryan W October 5, 2013 at 1:35 pm

Visit realflorencenews.myevent.com here we are asking for donations as we build a news station dedicated only to the Florence and PeeDee area of SC

120 Bryan W October 5, 2013 at 12:04 pm

Hello everyone, I have just created a page called Real Florence News (RFN) this page will be the go to web site for News in the Greater Florence area and a page where we can voice our concerns with the lack of coverage the News stations are providing our area. We all must remember there was a time that WBTW was based right here in Florence as well as WPDE now all of them are located down in Myrtle Beach and these stations can care less about this part of their coverage area. The area that got them started, this Facebook page is a work in progress. Thanks and please like the page. REAL FLORENCE NEWS

121 steve October 4, 2013 at 5:56 am

heard a radio ad for San Jose Tacos and Tequila this week, went to check it out last night : STILL not open!

122 Shannon October 3, 2013 at 11:34 pm

@Benny I heard a commercial for PAlmetto PArty this weeek on the radio, so I assume so.

123 Benny October 3, 2013 at 2:26 pm

Is Palmetto Party and Costume still open?

124 Bryan W October 3, 2013 at 11:54 am

There is a sign up, it will be Tidal wave car wash.

125 Travis October 3, 2013 at 11:10 am

Anybody have any clue of what is going into the former First Citizens location at the intersection of Palmetto, Second Loop, and Evans? They tore the building down and the sign says sold on the property. Not the biggest area to build something but it is in a good location whatever becomes of it.

126 Tim September 25, 2013 at 5:49 pm

Bryan,

I don’t have any information on whether or not a brewery or brewpub would be frowned upon or welcomed downtown. Personally, I say the more the merrier as long as Florence can support it but, alas, I do not have the final say.

127 Bryan September 25, 2013 at 2:39 pm

@ Lisa – Seminar Brewing is a local group that has been brewing for many years. They will be the “house” beer inside Red Bone.

@ Tim – As another poster mentioned, do you know if the downtown development group have given any thought to a local (Florence) brewery operning downtown? I originally heard it was frowned upon, but didn’t know if you could provide any further insight. If not a brewery, a brewpub or tasting room perhaps?

130 Tim September 12, 2013 at 10:09 am

Anyone know anything about road or other utility construction on West Palmetto? Coming into work the past couple of days I’ve noticed some heavy equipment parked in vacant land near Cale Yarbrough Honda. Is work scheduled on Palmetto or some of the side streets?

Katie,

I’ve not heard about either coming to town. But, that doesn’t mean they’re not, it just means I haven’t heard anything.

However, I have heard that Walgreens is most likely the entity going to go where Percy & Willie’s is.

135 Katie September 10, 2013 at 4:14 pm

Is there any truth to the rumor that Carabba’s is coming to the old Percy and Willie’s? Also anybody know anything about Red Robin?

136 Lisa September 10, 2013 at 4:09 pm

Has anyone heard about a Brewery called Seminar Brewery going in next to Redbone Alley? Here is the info I found on their website! Looks exciting!

137 Tim September 10, 2013 at 1:20 pm

Moving away a little bit from downtown, does anyone know what is happening on West Palmetto, just east of Southern Hops and across from Cale Yarbrough? They’ve cleared some land on the south side of the street and I’m going to guess that they’re going to build something there.

138 Tim September 10, 2013 at 7:38 am

O’Neil, great input and I share your thoughts on many of those points. Hopefully much of that will come true. On a side note, FMU Health Sciences Center gets one step closer to reality.

http://www.scnow.com/news/article_677ce534-19c7-11e3-aa11-0019bb30f31a.html

Anything else out there people would love to have downtown?

139 O'Neil September 10, 2013 at 12:18 am

@ Tim: A Jason’s Deli or an handmade ice cream parlor would be great! Maybe a brick oven pizza place (like a Maddios) or a Barbarittos (it’s a much fresher approach to burritos. I ate at one in Atlanta, and it was awesome!). Also, if the downtown development group can help Bean Groovy get on its feet I think it would be a SOLID anchor along West Palmetto Street.

As for retail, I think taking a mix of what downtown Savannah has done by blending in national and local retailers would be great. I would love to see the Gap return to the Florence market and open downtown — that would certainly be a draw because a lot of us have to drive to Myrtle Beach or Columbia to shop at the Gap. A local retailer, if they’re interested, would be The Rivals store.

I think a brewery would also be nice downtown that paired it’s brews with dishes would be a welcomed addition, also a sushi place would be nice. I just think the landlords would benefit more if they had solid tenants with deep pockets that could really invest in the buildings down there.

I agree with Ryan, a Mast General Store would also be nice, but so would a mini independent movie theater that showed indie and Sundance films (Angelika Film Studios) would do really well — there’s not one of those ANYWHERE in the Southest; can you imagine the draw?!?!?!?

Anyways, glad to see Florence trying to come into its own. I’m thoroughly impressed with the drastic transformation of the city’s core, and hope the city can draw additional interest from developers across the Southeast to make it one of the hippest, happening spots in the South — because it’s seriously possible. Move over Charleston, Greenville, Columbia…here comes lovely FLORENCE!

140 Theresa September 5, 2013 at 10:01 pm

Unique Cake is closing.

141 Jeremy September 5, 2013 at 9:51 pm

@Tim

I’ve been working on JPeters/Copper River for a while.
They are still waiting to see how the whole ACA will affect them, but are interested in Florence.

142 Ryan September 5, 2013 at 1:12 pm

@Tim…all I can say is that I would LOVE to see a Mast General Store downtown. There’s one in Columbia, Greenville, and Hendersonville, NC all downtown locations. That would be a great addition especially with beach traffic coming through.

143 Tim September 5, 2013 at 11:40 am

Ashley, great point. I agree that having something for everyone should be a goal. Is downtown big enough to have both high-end as well as more moderately priced stores/restaurants?

144 Ashley September 5, 2013 at 11:20 am

@Tim…. I love that downtown is coming together and growing. I can’t wait for what is to come. When it comes to retail down there, that is exciting but I do have a reservation about it. I think whatever goes down there needs to be affordable to everyone. I have had a few people venture downtown to a restaurant and say it was a really good place with good food but a little out of their price range. So I would just hope whatever retail goes will be moderate and affordable to all so we can get even more people to step out of the malls and back downtown.

146 Tim September 4, 2013 at 8:53 am

Hey y’all,

I’ve been working with the Downtown Development folks to begin to target retail establishments to either open downtown or relocate to downtown (either from other Florence location or out of town). I wanted to get everyone’s opinion on the types of retail you would like to see downtown. Keep in mind that we’re not ready to go after large, national retailers nor are we sure that’s what should go downtown.

If you want to respond to this post that’s great. If you prefer to email me go ahead and do that if you wish. I really can’t say how much your input is appreciated.

Thanks

147 Tim September 4, 2013 at 8:44 am

I popped into the new gourmet hotdog and hamburger place going in next to Clay Pot. It’s going to be a really nice addition to the downtown. It will include a video arcade area for the kids and has an exit/entrance to the Renaissance Courtyard out back. Should probably be open before the end of the calendar year.

148 Jawaun McClam September 3, 2013 at 11:22 pm

Wow that’s great news for our city! Thanks Bryan!

149 Bryan September 3, 2013 at 5:49 pm

Well four construction projects I found out are in the works for Florence, Towneplace Suites near the Civic center, Florence Green South and Palmetto Station both Apartment complexes unknown locations and a Multi-Modal transportation Hub I assume downtown.

150 Neil White September 2, 2013 at 5:15 pm

We ate at Victor’s Bistro today. Had pork chops, salad, brownie for dessert. In 6 years living in Florence, this was the best meal we’ve ever had at a restaurant here. . Highly recommend.

151 Steve September 1, 2013 at 10:28 pm

Any one heard anything about San Jose , the old prime time ? Light , sign etc but nothing else.

152 Tim August 27, 2013 at 9:13 am

Lou, I hadn’t seen or heard about the McDonald’s. Very interesting. I assume it will be a new McDonald’s as they don’t usually go out of business.

I see that the construction has begun in earnest at the Academy Sports site near Virginia College.

153 Lou August 26, 2013 at 7:29 pm

McDonalds at Hwy. 52 has been bulldozed and there’s clearly something being built in the same place. I would think it’s going to be a newer McDonalds; does anyone know for sure?

154 Ben August 23, 2013 at 8:27 pm

Because I hadn’t seen it mentioned yet, the new Big Lots in the old Walmart across from Magnolia Mall is open now. It looks great inside, much larger than the one on Irby was.

155 Jeremy August 21, 2013 at 10:09 am

Did Asia Chinese and Japanese restaurant in the KJ’s IGA Plaza on Pamplico close?

I eat there all the time, and there was nobody there yesterday.

It would make me sad, since it’s the best of the cheap Chinese restaurants. Great Sushi too.

156 Craig August 8, 2013 at 7:16 am

It also appears that Highbeams on West Palmetto has been turned off. There is a new leasing sign on the lot as of yesterday.

157 Fran August 7, 2013 at 10:24 am

Southern Latitudes updated their webpage 8/2/13 that they have finally found a place and will make it know as soon as they close.

Also, is Cactus Jack’s closed? Every time I drive by about 6pm it looks totally empty and no cars.

158 Shannon Dunn August 5, 2013 at 7:25 am

@Tim. I have been told by the owner of Goosie Ganders that she is moving her shop there as soon as it is built and approved. According to her it is taking forever. Butler’s is moving also. They will be building a new location at 2533 West Palmetto right beside Naturally Outdoors and should be there by October.

159 Dina August 4, 2013 at 8:42 pm

@ Athena, I have seen the place at the beach so I figured maybe they were opening a second location here in Florence. Thanks.

160 Tim August 2, 2013 at 10:32 am

There’s a new building going up on West Palmetto/Hwy 76 just west of the Outdoor store. It looks like it might be pretty small. Anyone have any ideas as to what’s going on there?

161 Tim July 29, 2013 at 2:15 pm

Lighten up Rob. Life’s too short to not recognize and appreciate good, sarcastic humor. I’m as excited as everyone else about what’s going on in our fair city and even more excited to share what is to come.

162 Fran July 29, 2013 at 1:40 pm

Gezz Rob…chill, where’s your sense of humor?

163 Rob July 28, 2013 at 5:43 pm

@Tim sounds like The Library will be a place full of Martinis not books and smart aleck unwanted responses.

164 Scott howard July 28, 2013 at 12:28 pm

Iwm trying to look you up in cardsApp and canwt find you. Whatws your CBN?

165 Ryan July 25, 2013 at 5:43 pm

Well, my guess/rumor heard was true! Mike Reichenbach is opening a Volkswagen branch in Florence! Hopefully this means the Ford branch will be relocated to the new place.

166 Christopher July 23, 2013 at 3:25 pm

@Dina, The Library is supposed to be a martini lounge with space for hosting private events.

167 Athena R July 21, 2013 at 10:09 am

@Dina There’s a place in Myrtle Beach called The Library, and it’s a European and Continental restaurant. I wonder if that is going to be the same thing.

168 M. Heath July 20, 2013 at 10:19 pm

I am surprised Florence doesn’t have a McAlister’s Deli or a Jason’s Deli, or both. Spartanburg has both of them.

169 Tim July 20, 2013 at 8:45 pm

Dina, it’s a big building with books in it. :)

170 Dina July 19, 2013 at 11:26 pm

I saw a place called The Library on Dargan St. near Thai House 2 and Claypot. Anyone know what it is going to be or anything about it at all?

I see Highbeams is about to open. I’m not sure who came up with that name, but I can assure you that gentlemen that will be attracted by that name will be disappointed when they realize it’s a deli.

172 nancy July 15, 2013 at 10:11 pm

Is BoSmith Furniture store open? also FurnitureGeek

173 Fran July 10, 2013 at 10:25 am

Rebel Pizza is opening tonight 5-9pm at their new location. The Timmonsville place is closed,
They are in the Huntington Plaza, I think its called, on 2nd Loop.

174 Bryan July 9, 2013 at 3:36 pm

City Council approved funding for the downtown medical school, does anyone know where they are planning to build the school?

175 Ryan July 9, 2013 at 2:31 pm

I think I read that the name will stay Harris Teeter, although Kroger bought them out. Everything should be the same for now.

176 Shannon July 9, 2013 at 12:52 pm

I heard a Walgreen’s is going where Percy & Willie’s is. Also Kroger has bought HArris Teeter.

177 Fran July 8, 2013 at 4:40 pm

I haven’t heard anything about a Carabba’s but usually where there is an Outback…there’s a Carabba’s.
So I’m kind of surprised ones not here yet.

178 Vicky Z July 7, 2013 at 11:55 pm

I had lunch at Percy and Willie’s today and they confirmed they are moving to the old ReMax building behind the Mellow Mushroom. They didn’t say who was moving into their current location. They expect to be in new facility 11/1/2013.

179 LCR July 6, 2013 at 11:33 am

Is Percy & Willies moving next to Mellow Mushroom? And is Carabbas moving into Percy & Willies old location?

180 Tim July 3, 2013 at 1:25 pm
181 Tim July 2, 2013 at 1:05 pm

So, I see they’ve started clearing/demolishing the old Pepsi site in preparation for the Academy Sports and others. Has anyone heard more about who or what else is coming there? I know there was talk of Cheddarz restaurant at one time but is there more?

182 Alissa June 30, 2013 at 11:40 am

Latest status update from the Bean Groovy Facebook:

Update on location: :-(
Due to a combination of extensive landlord and building issues, I’ve made the decision to walk away from this problem site and start looking for a new location. I would like to find something in the downtown area. Multiple opportunities seem to be available. It’s just a matter of weighing out the pros and cons and deciding which direction is best for the Bean.

183 Kevin S June 29, 2013 at 7:04 pm

To confirm the rumor, yes, the old Mr Mark’s fun park is being looked at. Plans should be updated next month. Plan Is to expand the park. As of right now pray everything goes well. Contractor will meet next week.

184 Ryan June 26, 2013 at 9:55 pm

I actually posted on here on April 29th that Dickey’s was opening FYI.

185 Beth June 24, 2013 at 8:31 pm

There is an article on the Morning News site that explains that STARFIRE is NOT closing.

186 Tim June 24, 2013 at 4:41 pm

I’m having lunch there on Wednesday. I’ll ask then if no one else has cleared it up by then.

187 Bill June 24, 2013 at 1:17 pm

I also did a search on Palmetto Commercial Real Estate’s website and did not see a listing for Starfire’s building. If anybody knows someone who works there please have them clear this up. I tried calling them but today is their regular scheduled closed day. Starfire is my favorite Florence restaurant.

188 Bill June 24, 2013 at 12:56 pm

I stopped at Starfire today and saw no evidence of any for sale or for lease signs.

Wow! I agree Tim. When I worked on Palmetto we use to go there all the time for lunch…what a shame! :(

190 Tim June 24, 2013 at 8:55 am

Yikes! Starfire is one of the few restaurants that is actually worth going to in Florence. I really hate to see it close if true.

191 Lou June 23, 2013 at 9:34 pm

Oh no…I hate to see Starfire close. I didn’t eat there that often but always thought they were pretty good. A shame.

192 Sloane Spencer June 23, 2013 at 6:24 pm
193 Tim June 23, 2013 at 10:22 am

I want to say that I heard that someone is trying to revive the funpark. Don’t quote me on it though.

194 Neheth June 22, 2013 at 10:39 pm

Ok, ok. I was just having fun geesh. It’s going to be a Dickeys BBQ. Anyone know what’s going in the old Frankie’s Fun Park?

195 Jawaun McClam June 22, 2013 at 10:01 pm

I dont know about you all but im so excited for Downtown Florence, and im always thinking of ideas for downtown! But anyway i think We should put up billboards up along i95 so we can get some of that interstate traffic to maybe stop by downtown. They would have to get off probably the exit with lucas street. Also downtown could put up billboards throughout the city. But they should do this after the museum and other future businesses open.

196 Lou June 22, 2013 at 9:56 pm

Tim’s right; I don’t think we’re into guessing but, having said that, I’m hoping it’s the 2nd Cook Out. They told me after the first one opened that the next one would be over on 52 somewhere. Hope and pray it’s not another Check Into Cash or Dollar Store. lol

197 Tim June 22, 2013 at 7:18 pm

Neheth, if you’ve got some news or rumor, go ahead and share. I don’t think of us want to play 20 questions.

198 Neheth June 22, 2013 at 7:03 pm

Anyone wanna know what’s going in the old Bojangles location on Lucas Street?

199 Bryan June 22, 2013 at 12:53 pm

I don’t know how true this is, but I hear that Costco wants to build near a high visibility location preferably beside the interstate, that would be great news if this rumor is true.

200 Fran June 22, 2013 at 8:41 am

Oh I agree Tim…its already a mess on the w/e, holidays and maybe week days, I don’t know! When we go to Sam’s Club or the Mall now we go any other way than David McLeod! But then coming in the other way off Radio Rd to Woody Jones is a mess too! Too many business’ in that area with too many cars!

201 Tim June 21, 2013 at 2:18 pm

Fran, I hope they end up reconfiguring that intersection once Academy and others get built. Gonna be a lot of traffic at that intersection.

202 Fran June 21, 2013 at 12:14 pm

A friend of mine is in construction and said the Academy Sports just went out for construction bid. Bidding is up on 6/28 so guess it will come to be after that! Can’t wait to see what else will be going in there and so nice to see that empty place become something!

203 Greer June 20, 2013 at 11:36 pm

San Jose Is coming next to regal.

204 Fran June 20, 2013 at 10:17 am

Oh No Flossip…say its not true! What a shame :( After all the work they did?

205 The Flossip June 19, 2013 at 11:15 pm

I have heard that Bean Groovy is a no-go.

206 Monica F June 19, 2013 at 4:51 pm

Orange Leaf has opened. It’s a frozen yogurt shop on Cashua next to Pretty-n-Bliss. Cool décor and yummy yogurt and toppings!

207 Athena June 19, 2013 at 9:37 am

Has anyone heard anything about Bean Groovy? There haven’t been any updates on his Facebook page recently.

208 Lou June 18, 2013 at 9:14 pm

I’m with you Fran…..wish SL was at the old Prime Time location. I can’t see another Mexican place doing very well there. We’ve already got La Bamba which has a loyal following and now Chipotle Mexican Grill. And according to the sign, it’s got the same or a similar name as another Mexican restaurant that used to be here in town and it certainly wouldn’t be much competition IMHO. Hope it’s a different one at least.

209 Fran June 18, 2013 at 1:55 pm

LOL..just went to SC Latitudes webpage to see if any new news! Updated yesterday..

“We have successfully narrowed down our newest location to (2 prime spots) that we our confident will succeed and provide the atmosphere promised.” They hope to make a decision in 1-2 weeks!

I’m a happy camper!

210 Fran June 18, 2013 at 1:51 pm

Haven’t heard/seen anything more about it lately Tim.

They finally took down the Prime Time sign and a lot of stuff going on for the Modern Mexican place.
Really wish it was SC Latitudes going in there…Too many Mexican restaurants around….IMHO :)

211 Tim June 18, 2013 at 10:11 am

Anyone hear more about the Academy Sports/Cheddars development on McLeod and Beltline? Just curious as it’s been quiet around here lately.

212 Lou June 17, 2013 at 8:53 pm

Tried Marco’s Pizza next to Creek Ratz; it was pretty good!

213 alissa June 9, 2013 at 1:41 pm

I’m pretty sure that Taste is a scam. There was a posting for all positions on Craigslist but the website you apply at is a known scam website.

214 Fran June 7, 2013 at 10:58 am

@Mariah..never heard of a Taste Restaurant. Where is it opening?

215 Sylvia Hunt June 6, 2013 at 12:08 pm

Does anyone know what they are building out west palmetto by Sneed Middle School. They tore all the trees down in that area.

216 Fran June 5, 2013 at 2:31 pm

Ms. Flossip posted this on FB and I went to SC Latitudes web page. They finally got their funding!
Too bad it took so long that they lost the Old Primetime, but they posted they were looking for an existing building and if anyone knows of anything to let them know. I can start being excited again :)
I would mention Victor’s old building but they would have to enlarge it.

217 Shannon June 5, 2013 at 7:32 am

It appears Tapas has now become Highbeams in the old Ryan’s building. First it appeared to be a restaurant but now looks like it will be a club. Does anyone know if this is correct? If not a nightclub, what is Highbeams? It sounds like a particular kind of club, but I know that can’t be the case in the Florence city limits.

218 Mariah June 3, 2013 at 10:51 am

Has anybody heard of the Taste Restaurant opening in Florence ?

219 Sandra June 2, 2013 at 7:54 pm

No one knows what happen to the Red Brick House on Cashua?

220 John June 1, 2013 at 11:01 am

It’s official Badcock furniture is moving into old Walmart…they have a sign…no sign for the rumored big lots yet

221 Christopher May 31, 2013 at 9:26 am

Dolce Vita Chocolate and Wine Tasting Room’s official grand opening is this Saturday, June 1st! Open 11am – 6pm! They have a great selection of wines, handmade Belgian hhocolates, and cakes & pimento cheese from Sweetleighs. It is located at 152S. Dargan, right beside Da Massimo’s.

222 Kevin May 30, 2013 at 5:53 pm

I spent my day today taking pictures of the of the old Mr. Marks fun park. Waiting on realtor to give inside tour. I think this location has potential. My hopes are the corner lot will sell. The sign says Lease. My goal is to bring Family Entertainment back to Florence.

223 Shannon May 30, 2013 at 7:17 am

@Fran Tapas lounge has been auctioning stuff for a couple of weeks and just heard a radio announcement of when their grand opening is. There will be bands, etc, but not sure when. Pita Pit will be in the old Quizno’s space beside Stride Rite shoes. Marcos pizza has already opened up besdides Creek Ratz,

224 Terrie May 29, 2013 at 10:03 pm

Saw a billboard across from ESAB yesterday. “Pita Pit” coming soon! 1988 West Palmetto Street. This is a chain. Menu can be seen online.
Also, Orange Leaf frozen yogurt put up store sign last week in the shopping plaza beside Creek Ratz on Cashua. They are also a chain like Sweet Frog and have a website.
Rebel Pie opening up in the shopping center where Cafe Florentine is on 2nd loop. They keep updating their Facebook with renovation pics.

225 Fran May 29, 2013 at 3:21 pm

Well..guess Tapas Lounge won’t be opening in the old Ryan’s. Drove by there the other day and the sign now says Auction Sat. June 15th.

226 Ashley May 27, 2013 at 9:36 pm

Heard today that both Checkers will be cleaned, updated and will reopen soon….

227 Judy May 26, 2013 at 4:57 pm

Any news on when Bean Groovy will open?

228 LG May 24, 2013 at 12:36 pm

The old Primetime building has opening soon “Modern Mexican Restaurant”…

229 Jason May 21, 2013 at 8:21 pm

230 Bryan May 18, 2013 at 3:02 pm

Downtown is really starting to come along, I like the changes that are taking place. I envision a pharmacy like Walgreen’s locating down there and the building that is on the corner of Irby and Evans across from the old post office being turned into apartment homes. I also envision a inter-modal transportation center being built there as well. I would love to know where the new medical school will be placed and I believe it’s about time the new judicial center starts gaining some traction. I read in a local area paper that there are plans to put a clock tower downtown… apparently the individuals that want to do this wants it to be built out of steel. I believe it should be built of brick and steel that would be atheistically appealing. I like the new light that are going up downtown and the fact that its not the orange glowing kind but a clean bright white light. Downtown is going to be so different in the next few months and years, I’m glad that it’s finally starting to take shape.

231 Ken May 16, 2013 at 6:36 pm

Will there ever be any development around FMU and the flea market?

232 Ken May 16, 2013 at 6:33 pm

It appears that Fitness World is opening a larger location on Second Loop in the plaza near Heritage Lane

233 Sandra May 16, 2013 at 4:03 pm

Actually I was referring to the red brick house on casual. They had some great stuff. Hoping they just moved somewhere.

234 Sandra May 15, 2013 at 3:15 pm

Anyone know what happen to the Red Barn on Cashua? The building is empty. Did they close their doors overnight or move?

235 Rich May 15, 2013 at 12:41 pm

Both Checkers location have closed

236 Jon May 11, 2013 at 9:35 pm

A lot of work going on at the old wal-mart.

237 Tammy May 8, 2013 at 1:03 pm

The sign at the old Ryan’s building on Palmetto says a new Tapas lounge will be open there soon.

238 Jon May 8, 2013 at 10:21 am

Auddie Brown Superstore has moved last week and its already sold according to the sign out front.

239 Shannon May 6, 2013 at 12:35 pm

And Bean Groovy Sandwich Station should be opening soon on West Palmetto Street. Also it looks like a new restaurant is opening soon in the old Ryan’s building.

240 Fran May 6, 2013 at 10:20 am

Also saw in the Sunday paper that the owner of the City Bar and Grill on Evans is redoing it and it will be a wood oven restaurant with pizza and sandwiches and some other things. The article was really good and looks like they are really moving on making downtown nicer.

241 Christopher May 6, 2013 at 10:06 am

There are plans for a new cafe in downtown Florence. It will be next to Dolce Vita (which is next to Da Massimo’s). They will be serving gourmet burgers and hotdogs with handcut fries. Not sure when they will open, but guessing the end of the year/beginning of next year.

242 GJ May 3, 2013 at 11:28 am

Tim, it’s going to be a park/green space.

243 Tim May 2, 2013 at 12:05 pm

Anyone know what they’re building (if anything) on Irby, south of Palmetto, adjacent to one of the government buildings? I saw them leveling and prepping a smaller lot there a couple of weeks ago.

244 jenn May 2, 2013 at 10:39 am

They need to put something over where the old pecan company was .It looks so bad over that way now.florence is look better but needs to put something there.

245 Fran April 30, 2013 at 1:54 pm

@Mark..Big Lots on Irby is moving to the old Walmart. Curious minds want to know…what are you going to open? :)

246 James Harper April 30, 2013 at 11:52 am

@ Mark: That’s going to be hard pressed to find in a place like Florence.

There’s the Old Winn-Dixie at the intersection of Evans and Cashua, and some locations on the southside along Irby — but even that inventory is not 85K to 130K square feet.

Have you reached out to a commercial broker? Palmetto Commercial has helped land a number of large retailers to the area. You may also want to contact the Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust, it’s my understanding they may be looking to build another power center in somewhere in West Florence. Also Colliers had a real estate division in Florence, that’s another contact. Hope that helps!

And BTW, the Sam’s Club on Beltline is going to expand. I just spoke with the contractor up here in Winston-Salem (Sexton Construction) that’s been tapped to lead the project.

247 Ryan April 29, 2013 at 9:58 pm

Dickey’s BBQ chain opening in August at the old Bojangles’ on US 52 near the I95 bridge.

248 Jon April 29, 2013 at 6:52 pm

Fred’s is about to close, decent size store not that big, why do you want a building? What would you like to open?

249 Mark April 29, 2013 at 5:37 pm

I’m looking for 85K – 150K sf vacant retail box in in he retail node of Florence. Knowing the former Wal-Mart is gone, is there anything else out there?

250 Fran April 29, 2013 at 3:20 pm

American Lighting on Second Loop is gone/closed/empty.

251 Fran April 29, 2013 at 2:43 pm

@Tommy…not the whole town :) I for 1 would love to see less chains and more quaint, individually owned places. That is what I want to see downtown where you can walk around and window shop/shop in the cute different places and stop in for a drink or something to eat in different restaurants. That would be great but we have to have individuals that can afford to open places. Chains have money and can go where ever they want. I’m not excited about them but I guess anything different than a Mexican restaurant is thrilling right now :)

252 Tommy Crayton April 29, 2013 at 10:54 am

Why does this town get SO excited about chain restaurants?

253 shannon April 29, 2013 at 7:06 am

Fred’s is also closing. They are having a closing sale currently going on.

254 Kristin April 28, 2013 at 5:08 am

I want a TGI Fridays! Any signs it’s coming?

255 John April 27, 2013 at 7:47 pm

Old Walmart is being split, one half will be badcock furniture, and the big section will be Big Lotz moving from Irby Street to West Florence

256 Lisa April 27, 2013 at 10:24 am

Does anyone know what’s going on at the old Walmart by Golden Corral?

257 AB April 27, 2013 at 9:46 am

@ Judy – the building over by Freedom Florence is the Pediatric Dentist Dr. Elvington – she’s moving there soon.

258 shannon April 25, 2013 at 7:17 am

Fran according to this link on scnow.com they are looking at several locations.
http://www.scnow.com/news/business/article_728cbc24-8cf5-11e2-bf02-0019bb30f31a.html

259 Fran April 24, 2013 at 10:27 am

Thanks Shannon…The strip center next to Creek Ratz is filling up. Is that were they were supposed to go? Or will they be building on Celebration/Cashua somewhere, do you know? I don’t really think there is enough room in the shopping center next to Creek Ratz for them especially after they were planning on going in the Old Prime Time that was huge!

Maybe they should think of taking over Victor’s Can always build out for more room!

260 Shannon April 24, 2013 at 7:29 am

@Fran. According to the paper Southern LAtitudes is moving near Creek Ratz. Victor’s will be opening Mother’s Day in their new location.

261 Fran April 23, 2013 at 11:31 am

Has anyone heard anything else about Southern Latitudes? I posted on their FB but haven’t heard anything in awhile. Too bad they lost the lease on the Old Prime Time but hope they are looking for somewhere else in Florence.

262 Bryan April 23, 2013 at 8:24 am

A few weeks back someone on here said they knew what else was being built out in the Academy Sports shopping center, other than the Cheddars does anyone know?

263 Paige April 23, 2013 at 8:00 am

Looks like Pita pit is moving into old quiznos location on palmetto.

264 Tim April 21, 2013 at 9:34 pm

@Judy, I think it’s a dentist or orthodontist office of some sort.

265 Judy April 21, 2013 at 11:30 am

Anyone know what will be in the new building on Freedom Blvd. in front of Freedom Florence?

266 Tim April 17, 2013 at 4:01 pm

@Hopie, Groomingdales moved to the Palmetto Animal Hospital on Second Loop location. They haven’t closed.

Thanks,

Tim

267 Fran April 17, 2013 at 3:20 pm

Victor’s has on their sign “Moving Soon” So guess the hotel is moving right along!

268 Hopie956 April 17, 2013 at 12:59 pm

Does anyone know why Groomindale’s closed? I always liked how they cut my dog’s hair.

PeeDee Foodie just posted that in the spot where the India Restaurant was…206 W. Palmetto there will be the Long Grain Cafe opening the end of April or beginning of May. It will combine traditional Asian and Southern flavors. I personally can’t imagine that combination but…..

Also, its finally out in the open :) Rebel Pizza is moving to 2nd Loop into the closed Old Europe Mediterranean Restaurant! I can’t wait!!

3rd…went to the Farmers Market Sunday and the street on the side, behind the Cosmetology School, is all cleared/dug up like in 2 or 3 spots. Anyone know what’s going in there?

271 Lou April 14, 2013 at 6:05 pm

Thanks Justin! :)

272 John April 11, 2013 at 7:05 pm

An upscale Mexican restaurant is opening at old Prime Time..and have played 2 months already for the lease.

273 Tim April 11, 2013 at 3:06 pm

@Margaret, Abuelos is okay. Not sure we need yet another Mexican restaurant in Florence.

274 Margaret April 11, 2013 at 2:41 pm

I recently visited (last weekend) Abuelos at Coastal Grande Mall and was informed that they are looking at opening a Florene location.

275 Justin April 9, 2013 at 4:15 pm

@Lou If it’s the one i’m thinking of, it’s Lee Burris. The Banner for his business is the 4th down on this page on the right side. 843-206-8192

The signs are up for Marco’s Pizza at Celebration Shopping Center near Creek Ratz. I love that you can actually read the sign from the road!

277 John April 4, 2013 at 12:39 pm

Sagebrush has been torn down

278 John April 3, 2013 at 3:24 pm

280 real pee dee news March 28, 2013 at 4:32 pm

Quiznos is closed.

281 Tim March 28, 2013 at 9:12 am

Just an FYI that Clay Pot Coffee House will be closed this Monday, April 1st. Please plan accordingly if you are a frequent customer.

282 Lou March 25, 2013 at 8:56 pm

Flossip- can you tell us the name of that handyman you recommended not long ago again? I’ve tried to retrieve it but can’t. Thank you!

283 Sandra March 25, 2013 at 2:03 pm

It’s not Florence, but Trader Joes just opened this past weekend in Columbia. For those who have never shopped there before, your gonna wish we had one in Flo Town.

284 Dina March 23, 2013 at 7:08 pm

Pho Vietnam is open next to Papa John’s on 2nd Loop. Eat in or take out! So excited to have a Vietnamese place again.

285 Fran March 22, 2013 at 10:06 am

Well..Pee Dee Foodie posted on fb that he got a response from Panera Bread and at this time they don’t have any plans to open in Florence. ;(

286 Fran March 21, 2013 at 11:19 am

@Bryan…I agree with both you and Tim about being tired of hearing all Horry County news and if lucky catching something from here. But…are you going to run it if the FCC says it could be? :)

287 Bryan March 21, 2013 at 9:20 am

Tim….good point but I wouldn’t say its a valid point there are media markets smaller than Florence that are able to support tv stations. I believe Florence has enough to support a Florence based station.

288 Tim March 21, 2013 at 8:52 am

@Brian, that’s an interesting thought. I don’t know if there’s enough revenue to support a local, Pee Dee station any more. I would enjoy not always hearing about the Beach area first and foremost in all newscasts.

289 Bryan March 20, 2013 at 11:40 pm

I know this may sound crazy, but how do you all feel about a true local TV station. We use to have three Fox56, Wpde and WBTW have left and broadcast from Horry county. I know it takes alot of resources but a group of people coming together can make anything happen. We could petition the FCC basically state that weare not being served anymore and obtain a liscense for a true Pee Dee station. I know it’s a wild idea but im.tired hearing about Horry county. This may go no where but it’s just a thought.

290 Lou March 20, 2013 at 8:26 pm

Waffle House on Second Loop??

291 holymoly March 20, 2013 at 4:36 pm

Maddie and Fisher were saying that panera bread will be opening soon. Anyone know where? That will be amazing!

292 Tim March 20, 2013 at 2:53 pm

Heather, that is going to be a dialysis center.

293 Heather March 20, 2013 at 1:14 pm

Any one know what consturction is going on behind the waffle house on second loop?

294 Fran March 20, 2013 at 8:56 am

Ok..to answer all the rumors/guesses about Publix coming here I contacted their Real Estate Dept and just got an email back. This is the important part of the email:

“I appreciate your desire to have a Publix Super Market located more conveniently to you. While we have no plans to move into a Piggly Wiggly or a Harris Teeter, we are monitoring the competition and residential growth of the area for a future opportunity.”

So guess we have to still hope, but we do have residential growth so who knows :)

295 Bryan March 18, 2013 at 10:08 pm

Was downtown today and noticed that the old Carolina theatre looked as if there was some work going on. There was some type of covering on the front door that depicted an arcade. Also I hear a pozza parlor is coming downtown. Does anyone know where the medical school will go if it is decided to be built downtown?

296 Kirk March 18, 2013 at 3:11 pm

On their facebook page, Chuntee says they’re reopening today with new owners.

297 Maddie March 15, 2013 at 7:50 pm

I heard Rebel Pie is moving into the old Cafe Florentine location.

298 Fran March 15, 2013 at 10:50 am

Heather..thanks for posting that, Bummer for them but Cashua is closer to me, so I like that! Was really looking forward to them opening soon so anywhere will work for us! So SC Latitudes and a Pizza place are opening in that strip mall next to Creek Ratz? Restaurant Row??

Great…another Mexican place in the Old Prime Time. Cheddars in the Pepsi thingy…gezz, mexican restaurants are getting to be lilke the dollar stores. No one have any imagination anymore?

Lou..Rebel Pie is moving to Florence, I’m sure Alan will post here or as soon as I see it on FB I will. I heard on the podcast he’s looking for sometime in April :)

299 Heather March 15, 2013 at 8:04 am

Poor Latitudes,
http://www.scnow.com/news/business/article_728cbc24-8cf5-11e2-bf02-0019bb30f31a.html
Guess there will be two Mexican Choices for movie night.

300 Lou March 14, 2013 at 8:40 pm

Rebel Pie is supposedly moving; anyone know where?

301 Tim March 14, 2013 at 4:58 pm

Marcos Pizza opening soon in the strip mall on Cashua near Creek Ratz

302 real pee dee news March 14, 2013 at 9:00 am

1. Percy and Willeys is moving to the old ReMax building near Mellow Mushroom…they are doing so to get more of the hotel traffic.
2. A Pita restaurant is going next to Quiznos on West Palmetto.
3. Southern Lattitudes will not be in the old Prime Time location…another restaurant has already leased it. They will be opening next to creek ratz in the large strip mall on cashua.
4. There will be some more news regarding the old Pepsi property…very exciting.

303 Austin March 13, 2013 at 9:38 pm

I heard rumors tat a publix was opening in the former Piggly-Wiggly on Second Loop… who knows?

Make sure you drive by, or check out Bean Groovy’s Facebook page, to check out the work going on at their new space … VERY IMPRESSIVE!

I was in town for business and visit family, and could not believe the amount of work that’s going into that location.

Florence should be proud and support his business!!!

305 Jeremy Davis March 12, 2013 at 3:26 pm

Chutnee is supposed to reopen from renovations this week.

Also saw the Blockbuster on 2nd loop is finally closing (no big surprise there though).

Here’s the link to the WBTW story if anyone is interested.

308 John March 12, 2013 at 8:18 am

There is an article on wbtw.com about the plaza opening on Woody Jones..only confirmed anchor is the sports store…doesn’t mention a Cheddar’s..wonder why?…I would.like tgi Fridays there too!

309 August March 11, 2013 at 11:13 am

Smart Phone Repair is moving downtown to 190 W Evans St which is on the corner of Irby and Evans. It is a locally owned business run by a young entrepreneur that specializes in repairs on iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches. There will be retail space as well in this business. It is expected to open March 30th in that specific location.

310 Ashley March 10, 2013 at 9:00 pm

@Tim, I think we both want the exact same thing downtown. I’m so excited to see what happens.

From my understanding with Big Lots, Irby St would close. There are a lot of things that need to be done to that building and they are just going to move.

Second Loop, was told it is just a dollar general but they placed the building so there could be something in the future too.

I would love to have Panera Bread here. I miss a good sandwich shop where I could get sandwich, salad and/or soup. (it was sad that from rumor that the person running Atlanta Bread could or wouldn’t do what was needed so we all suffer from its closing)

But there is my two cents, lol.

311 AB March 10, 2013 at 12:21 pm

It looks like they are building more than just a Dollar General there on 2nd Loop. Anyone else know what else is going in there?

312 Erin March 10, 2013 at 10:40 am

I sure hope the rumor is true that Belk will be adding MAC cosmetics–that store desperately needs something to drive customers to the store. I was told by an associate there recently that the mgmt didn’t think Florence had the $$ to carry the better designer lines. It’s why you’ll see something in one of their mailer ads but when you go into the store, they don’t carry the line. She said we were a “ghetto Belk”- and that’s the #1 reason I seldom go there anymore unless it is to buy makeup–you just can’t find nice things there anymore like you can at other Belk’s across the state.

313 Fran March 10, 2013 at 10:08 am

@Christopher..is that going to be a new Big Lots or is the one on Irby moving? Do you know? I love to see empty buildings being filled but not if its going to leave another empty one somewhere else.

314 Christopher March 9, 2013 at 6:13 pm

@Jim and Tim. The old Wal-mart will become a Big Lots and Badcock furniture store with one or two spaces for future retail.

315 Tim March 9, 2013 at 4:36 pm

@Jim, I saw today that they are definitely doing work on the old Wal-Mart location but I do not know what is going there. I will see if I can find out next week what’s going on. Either way, it is positive news if something new is going to be there.

316 Jim March 8, 2013 at 5:14 pm

Saw today that work is being done on the old Walmart across from Magnolia mall .Looks like there putting in new A.C. units or redoing the roof . Anybody know if anything is moving in there ?

317 Fran March 8, 2013 at 10:56 am

Oh I sure hope the ones that said Panera Bread was coming are right! I really loved when Atlantic Bread was here and sad when they closed. So would be really nice and I think Florence would love it!

318 Ford March 8, 2013 at 9:30 am

As the owner of a VW, I hope a dealership opens in Florence. Its a hassle to get approved work done in Myrtle Beach or Sumter.

319 Shannon March 8, 2013 at 7:26 am

John at the Morning News posted on his FB page that Panera Bread is not coming to Florence.

320 The Flossip March 7, 2013 at 10:31 pm

Ah. Sorry about that. Rachel didn’t post it, she emailed it to me as she often does but I wasn’t trying to slight anyone.

321 Tyler March 7, 2013 at 10:15 pm

I have to call it like I see.

We hold journalist accountable, and I’m afraid you owe a poster an apology.

“Rachel” was not the first person to post the map and schematic highlighting the Cheddars and Academy Sports and Outdoors. A poster by the name of “James Harper” did on Feb. 19, according to this wonderful blog’s records. He’s also added some other insightful posts about the city.

Just an FYI, I would hate for you to alienate a poster by giving someone else credit.

This is such a great outlet (better at than the Morning News) and I think credit should be due where it’s due.

“Rachel” did not post that information first.

I think RIVALS in moving to the Old printing co next to LOWES and HOBBY LOBBY. Painters have been painting the building GRAY with Clemson and USC colors the last few weeks.

326 Tim March 6, 2013 at 8:34 pm

Katie, I think the Rivals store is moving there from their Palmetto Street location.

327 Lou March 6, 2013 at 7:25 pm

Such exciting news about all the new things happening around town. I agree with Flossip that a mix of things is good….gives everybody a choice. And, anybody that sells Sweetleighs cakes has got to do well! I’ll go there just for that.

328 Ryan March 6, 2013 at 4:17 pm

Sorry for the delay. I was told that Mike Reichenbach was approached by Volkswagen to open up a dealership here in Florence. If this is the case, the Ford/Lincoln dealership will most likely be moving as well.
It’s in a very bad and secluded part of town, so that would be the smartest decision. Where, though? Celebration Blvd? Thoughts?

329 Naomi L. Gomez March 6, 2013 at 1:39 pm

Just read that Publix is thinking of buying out Harris Teeter. So far just a rumor.

On another note….I come from Peoria, IL, and we had a Cheddar’s there. It is along the lines of Chili’s, but I actually like it better. The food was good, and the service was fantastic.

330 katie March 6, 2013 at 1:28 pm

I was on David Mcleod blvd yesterday and noriced that the building by lowes is being painted steipes of clemaon and carolina colors. Does anyone know what is going on there?

331 The Flossip March 6, 2013 at 11:46 am

Thank you to everyone that is commenting! I look forward to Florence growing. Personally, I want a diverse mix of chain stores and restaurants with locally owned places as well. I think that will give us so many more options and draw in even more people to help our tax base as well as all of the people employed here.

332 John March 6, 2013 at 11:30 am

Wish it would go (carrabas) either at 95/52 or somewhere towards Florence mall. We have olive garden at civic center..

333 Christopher March 6, 2013 at 11:30 am

Dolce Vita is a Chocolate (Belgian) and Wine shop that will be opening downtown. They will also carry cakes from Sweetleighs Cakes and Treats (www.sweetleighscakes.com)

334 Tim March 6, 2013 at 11:04 am

Excited for Academy Sports and Cheddars. That should really revitalize that intersection of McLeod and Woody Jones/Beltline. Carrabas would be a nice addition as well.

Let’s not forget that some really nice things are happening downtown with the revitalization and the need to support these folks in the early days since the foot traffic will be less initially. I know Bean Groovy had their Kickstarter project get funded so they should be opening soon and as Heather mentioned, a new place downtown (Dolce Vita?) looks to be opening soon. All in all, I would say there’s a lot of good things happening in Florence.

345 Heather March 4, 2013 at 7:03 pm

Was enjoying a nice cup of coffee from Clay Pot today AND saw a new space under construction next to Da Massimo. The letter on the door stated petition for Dolce Vita to sell beer and wine. It looks really nice from the outside, I’m excited!

346 Tiffany March 4, 2013 at 10:08 am

@Tim, It’s interesting to watch what’s going on downtown and it’s exciting to see the changes. I have to agree with a previous opinion someone voiced earlier; I also heard that they’re stopping certain businesses from coming downtown. What concerns me is that they’re focusing on office space and “conference spaces”, but that’s not what going to breathe culture and life into a city. Most cities need movement and diversity. Local bands, a thriving art scene, and culture are things that keep people interested.

I know that money is what drives people to make decisions and that there’s a “buddy system” in business, which is why most of the work downtown is involving law offices etc…but after business is over for the day and weekends, people want escape and entertainment. People who are staying at the hotel are going to need something that peak their interest while they’re downtown. Also, Research should be done to see what the people of Florence want. On the flip side, some people may need to be educated and exposed to the new, exciting, and wonderful things that the arts can bring. There are so many benefits to art that have nothing to do with money, but have a lot to do with bringing people together that would not even associate with each other. Or getting our children off the streets and away from gangs. Or helping people with disabilities. Or even bringing peace into the heart of someone who just wants to unwind that day.

Honestly, the people who have money are going to spend it the way they want…and they’re going to do things that benefit themselves and their lives. So, we’ll see how it’s going to unfold in the coming months and years.

Not a new addition but I did notice that the First Choice (?) bank building across from Carolinas Hospital is being torn down. The one that looked more like a mobile trailer than a real building. Could this mean something new coming to that location?

354 Tim February 26, 2013 at 10:56 am

Great discussion. Let’s keep the ideas flowing, nothing is too small nor too outlandish at this point. Moving from bricks and mortar to events, what types of events would y’all like to see in Florence. The Pecan Festival and Friday After Five are great, are there other things that might make sense? I would like to see some sort of summer/early fall music festival that would bring in regional/national acts for a long weekend event. What about a concerts on the green with the chamber orchestra on the grounds of the library? What about a downtown art fair at some point?

355 Ted February 26, 2013 at 10:14 am

MAC cosmetics is rumored to be coming to the Belk in florence.

356 Bryan February 25, 2013 at 10:26 pm

@James

Absolutely, wholeheartedly I agree in aggressive annexation it benefits everyone in regards to services provided and the ability to expand the tax base. I don’t agree with a whole bunch of taxation but you do need some to provide the necessities and the quality of life that everyone has a right to. There is no reason Florence shouldn’t be out front and on the same levels as other so call top tier citied in the state. I wish Florence would market itself as the gateway to the beach there should be shops and restaurants multiple family homes on the far east side sort of like a gateway to the beach. Just imagine if Florence could capitalize or get investors to build a high speed train system from here to the beach. Endless ideas I have for my hometown. I see the potential just ready for lil ol Florence to come out of her adolescence and come into womanhood. Get her so called grown and sexy on…..lol.

357 James Harper February 25, 2013 at 10:10 pm

@ Bryan: What is this I hear? A South Carolinian pushing for annexation?

I can’t believe it. LOL!

Bryan, I wish your endeavor well, and couldn’t agree with you more. My mother was born and raised in Florence in 1954 and the city’s population was over 22,000 residents proper at that time — fast forward to the 2010 Census and Florence’s population still hasn’t broken the 50,000 threshold.

Big-time retailers don’t like that, especially if you’re not a tourist town (like Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach). Florence should take note of Rock Hill’s aggressive annexation measures to bring those around peripheral into the city. Rock Hill is now the fifth-largest city in the state with more than 66,000 residents — I have a hunch that if Florence were to pull in residents within five miles of its city limits, it would over take Rock Hill easily, and give the city some overdue respect and clout.

But, with that said, Florence is also technically larger than Spartanburg, Aiken and Goose Creek — all cities that do not have aggressive annexation policies, and are doing a FANTASTIC job pulling in retailers and industry that Florence dreams it could have.

I think Florence should focus on Florence first, then, adopt planning ordinances that push for denser zoning in places and neighborhoods like east Florence that provide a nice mixed-income balance so it’s not a crime-ridden, low income slum. Wilmington, N.C. is in the process of adopting a Urban Mixed-Use zone that will promote denser development in the city’s downtown core since we can’t annex into the county for the next 12 years.

Plus, as the city hopefully continues to unload its bounty of revival projects, you’re going to see more people want to move toward the core, thus promoting denser residential development in the city, which will drive the city’s population even higher.

There are also a number of vacant properties in the city that are ripe for denser, mixed use redevelopment, a number of infill development parcels — where, for example, a street, or a water or sewer line reaches the property, it will ultimately develop.

But that’s my 2 cents. I think Florence is an awesome city, I just wish its city/county leadership would think bigger in terms of its future. With it’s location, it could easily become the next Greenville, maybe even give Myrtle Beach a run for its money.

358 Bryan February 25, 2013 at 8:26 pm

What’s going on everyone….I’m excited just like everyone else on the new potential commercial realestate happenings taking place in West Flo. Let’s use our voices to push an expansion of the city limits. I know everyone is not going to want to be in the city, but those who are receiving the benefits should be put into the city. Currently we have over 37,000 in the city taken in to account those just on the outside it swells to close to 68,000….68,000 looks better on paper to National retailers and other companies than 37,000. Does anyone know what we have to do to push expansion.

359 Tim February 25, 2013 at 9:50 am

@Jawaun, I agree on all your points. I would say that the whole eastside of Florence is in need of help. However, if we try to do too much all at the same time nothing will get done. Let’s redevelop downtown and continue to develop the west side. Maybe some day things will get going on the far east side of town.

360 Jawaun McClam February 24, 2013 at 8:58 pm

I’m so excited for the new hotel coming near the civic center and the new plaza with Cheddar’s and Academy Sports and Outdoors! I can’t wait for them to open.

Also i think Percy’s and Willie’s should stay where they are. Its a good location, my aunt and her friends always come all the way from columbia just to eat there. They are in a good location.

And i was thinking that Florence should try to get a hotel near the airport. One of my relatives was disapointed that all the better hotels were on the west side.

361 Fran February 21, 2013 at 2:02 pm

Tim, your vision sounds wonderful and something I would really love to see. We lived in Aiken, SC for 6yrs before we moved to Florence. That is kind of what they had there. All the chain/big box stores were out on the south side and downtown was quaint streets and breezeways they called the Alley. There were restaurants with outside seating, pubs and the side streets had a few more pubs, ice cream store, big antique mall and lots of other places to window shop. We would go down there on a nice night and walk down the “alley” and decide where to eat, usually outside so we could watch the people and things going on. Different kinds of restaurants to choice from too. Then walk off dinner around town. Amazing how many people like to do that on a nice night! I miss it and hope to see it come to pass here!

362 Tim February 21, 2013 at 1:44 pm

@Ashley, thanks for the response. I agree, having a thriving, interesting downtown is more than shows or pubs, etc. I don’t know if Florence hired the guy that revitalized Greenville but I do know that the guy who used to be in Sumter is in Florence and they have a solid plan. I don’t know if Florence will ever be Greenville or Charleston but I would like to hope that we can be that quaint, quirky town in Eastern SC that has a thriving young professionals scene, thriving arts scene and a thriving local/regional music scene. How nice would it be to be able to head downtown on a Friday night with some friends and be able to have a choice of pubs/bars and restaurants to choose from? Maybe catch a great blues or country band. How nice would it be to stroll downtown on a Saturday afternoon and do some shopping/window shopping at the unique retail outlets, maybe grab an ice cream cone in the summer or sit outside and enjoy a coffee or latte on a Saturday morning? That’s sort of how I envision what I want downtown Florence to be.

It’s going to take a long time (if ever) to get where I think all of us want it to be but in some ways it has to start with us. Talk with your local council member to let him/her know you want downtown Florence to grow and revitalize, attend the current events hosted downtown, patronize some of those brave “pioneers” who have already set up shop downtown.

Finally, a solid downtown will help the powers that be attract new employers to town. I would have to think that right now it’s sort of embarrassing to take executives of prospective companies looking to relocate and show them downtown.

I would love to hear from others. This gets me excited!

363 Ashley February 21, 2013 at 11:52 am

@TIm…. The rumor was that the City of Florence hired the guy that helped redesign downtown Greenville. The plans are to turn our downtown into something that is similar to Greenville. I have heard that some of the higher ups in the city have been blocking businesses that want to setup downtown. They only want certain things and places down there. I think the people who get to decide on downtown should travel more and see what other places have, not just look at pictures and say yeah that could work here. I also think there should be more public opinion. I am 28 and I know what I would like to do downtown and it doesn’t involve a club scene or a play every week. Don’t get me wrong, I have an Art degree and I love the arts and glad to see Florence finally doing more with the arts but I’m not going to see a play every time there is a new one and yet I would like to spend time downtown like I do in Charleston and Greenville and such. I really hope that Florence finally gets the backing and push and everything else we need to get things better and where we would all like to see it.

364 Lou February 21, 2013 at 2:53 am

JMHO but I think it would be a mistake for Percy and Willie’s to move. It works right where it’s at and it seems like sometimes when restaurants try to move, they lose their business. ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ can be the right choice sometimes.

365 jessica February 20, 2013 at 8:17 pm

Opened a few weeks ago… Strutting turkey across from south Florence high. Awesome twist on a country buffet. Great food, good prices!

366 Jim February 20, 2013 at 7:24 pm

An awesome thing could be for the Percy’s and Willies location to be a Carrabbas….the Sagebrush to be a Logan’s or Texas Roadhouse, and to put a TGi Friday’s with the new complex coming at Woody jones, and David Mcleod….Would be awesome if it did!

367 Billy February 20, 2013 at 7:20 pm

Florence seems like a good match for a TGI Friday’s. I really like their food but only eat there once or twice a year since the nearest locations are at the Beach. Any chance of us getting one here?

368 Leah February 20, 2013 at 11:58 am

Percy and Willies is moving to the old Remax building near Mellow Mushroom.

369 Betsy February 20, 2013 at 11:36 am

Groomingdales is not closed. It has moved to a section in Palmetto Animal Hospital on Second Loop.

370 Gary February 20, 2013 at 10:26 am

The old Sagebrush building is going to be demolished, don’t know if there are any plans for the lot.

371 Tim February 20, 2013 at 10:21 am

FWIW, Groomingdale’s (pet grooming) on W. Palmetto has closed. Anyone know if they’re out of business or relocated?

372 Ron February 20, 2013 at 10:01 am

Rumor has it that it will be either the Logans, or Texas Roadhouse

373 Michael E. February 19, 2013 at 9:02 pm

Hello everyone does anyone know what the old SageBrush Steakhouse building is going to be?? Also Home2 inn and Suites will be by Swamp Fox Cinemas!!!

374 Tim February 19, 2013 at 3:55 pm

@James, thanks for the input. I agree with all you’ve said. My original hometown of Madison, WI did some really nice things with the streetlights, signs, etc in the downtown area to update and refresh the look.

375 James Harper February 19, 2013 at 1:00 pm

@ Tim: I t seems that while downtown Florence is starting to make some headway, it needs something for everybody.

Not everyone is going to want to come downtown to watch a performance, or go to the new museum (albeit, once it’s completed it’s going to be a GREAT anchor downtown).

Wouldn’t it have been nice if your city leaders had the foresight to place that gorgeous baseball stadium currently on the fringes of FMU in downtown Florence???? That’s your feet on the street, beds in heads and nightlife scene so desperately needed down there.

I also think downtown Florence needs its own brand, and the city should take extra steps to make infrastructure stand out. Get rid of the ugly traffic signals, and place new signals up with glowing street signs (we have these in our suburb south of Dallas, and they are incredibly beautiful and helpful to drivers). The city also needs to invest in street scaping that makes downtown more attractive to dinners that want to have patio dining.

Also, if Florence can get that USC School of Medicine downtown, that would be another great anchor…especially if studetn housing for those practicing professionals are provided.

But, that’s just my 2 cents.

376 James Harper February 19, 2013 at 12:52 pm

@ John: Academy Sports & Outdoors is similar to Dick’s. You can actually catch better sales at Academy than Dick’s on some items. We have both in our city, and they doing well. As for Cheddar’s, the serve typical American cuisines (i.e. burgers, pasta, margarita’s ect.). Quite affordable and large portions. Not to mention, they have some good dishes that change seasonally.

I think it’s going to be a great addition to the Florence dining scene.

Also heard that Logan Steakhouse or Texas Roadhouse is going somewhere in Florence, and Carrabbas is still targeting the area. Seems like the national retailers and restaurants are making Florence a submarket to Myrtle Beach…but thne again, Myrtle Beach isn’t getting a Chipotle either.

377 Tim February 19, 2013 at 9:56 am

OK, indulge me on this one please. I just returned from a business trip to Greenville. While there I spent some time wandering Main Street. That is the vision I want Florence to follow. Lots of bars, restaurants, hotels, shops, etc and it seemed very safe and clean.

How do we do that in Florence? I know we’re trying so don’t take this as a slam on anyone. I just want to see downtown Florence flourish like Greenville is. Is it more pubs/bars? More restaurants? Shopping? Family activities? What?

378 Tim February 19, 2013 at 9:26 am

That looks like it might be a really nice addition to Florence. I’m all for development and new businesses but let’s not forget the great entrepreneurs and business folks that are here now, working hard to add a needed service or product to Florence. Places like Bean Groovy, Rebel Pie, etc. We need to continue to patronize those folks and help them succeed.

I’m really looking forward to what Florence might look like in 2 years, 5 years and beyond.

379 John February 19, 2013 at 8:29 am

Never ate at a cheddars…what kind of food do they serve? All what is the sports store like….a store similar to Dicks?

380 James Harper February 19, 2013 at 12:38 am

Check out this link in regards to the Academy Sports & Outdoors coming to Florence: http://www.cityfeet.com/cont/ForLease/LN18030971/2300-David-H-McLeod-Blvd-Florence-SC-29501

It appears Academy Sports & Outdoors is anchoring a new, 96,550-square-foot retail development at that intersection. The Red Robin, however, is actually set to be a Cheddar’s.

But no fear, it looks like there are several outparcels for restaurant development, so it could still be true.

I’m certainly glad to see Florence is still getting the attention of national retailers and chains. Academy Sports & Outdoors is great store, and is certainly going to be an AWESOME addition to the market. Cheddar’s isn’t that bad of an eatery, either, and the service and food are pretty good.

Kudos Florence, I think you’re FINALLY becoming a real city! LOL!.

381 Tim February 18, 2013 at 1:26 pm

I can, thankfully, confirm that the building going up behind Waffle House on Second Loop/Pamplico Hwy is NOT a dollar store. They are putting up a dialysis center there. Sorry for the not-overly exciting news but I thought I should share.

382 Jennifer February 18, 2013 at 12:23 pm

Yes, I heard the same thing as well about the sports store and Red Robin. There is actually a job posting on http://www.indeed.com for a Manager of a new store coming to Florence, named Academy Sports and Outdoors. ;) It says the location is at the corner of Woody Jones Blvd and David McLeod Blvd! I’m so happy to see new places are wanting to come to Florence!

383 Matthew February 18, 2013 at 7:40 am

Just heard on radio that the rumor is that the old Pepsi place off David McLeod is to be site of an plaza with sports center and a red robin….and that also they said Percy’s and willies would possibly be on the move near the civic center…hmmm…thoughts? ( heard on 103X)

384 Margaret February 17, 2013 at 8:18 pm

@Tim and Fran I see that on my way home everyday. I was thinking(praying) maybe it was a Publix. But what could possibly be put back so far from the main strip? My daughter(10yrs old) said it was a Waffle House parking lot…

385 Fran February 16, 2013 at 10:53 am

@Tim…not sure what’s going up behind the Waffle House but we can only pray that its not another Dollar Store! :)

386 Kirk February 15, 2013 at 6:51 pm

Well so much for the Cuban Cafe on Cashua I guess. Their sign is gone and the building looks pretty dark.

387 Jen February 14, 2013 at 2:45 pm

There were people working in the old sagebrush parking lot today.

388 Tim February 14, 2013 at 9:16 am

Anyone know what is going up behind the Waffle House on Second Loop/Pamplico Hwy east of Irby Street, near Carolinas Hospital?

Looks like a pretty big lot of land they’ve cleared and are grading, prepping.

Thanks.

389 Sclatitudes February 13, 2013 at 4:55 pm

Southern Latitudes is still actively working towards opening as soon as physically possible. The 3410 Radio Dr (Formally know as Prime Cafe’) still remains the target location. We have hired all of our key personnel, obtained our licencing, vendors, and the restaurant re-design and transformation is ready to take place, but due VERY unexpected and last minute delays with banking lender has required us to unfortunately re-target our opening to April 2013 so we can obtain our final funding for the upgrades to allow us to open properly.

The website is in the process of being updated to reflect the re-targeted opening date and will display the finalize menus as well as other new features and specials that we will be offering. We very excited about what our establishment will bring to Florence and offer to our customers and we look forward to you visiting our establishment and enjoying our food and exciting atmosphere. We are deeply apologetic for the unexpected delays which we hope to have resolved in the coming days.

Thank you for your comments, support, and word of mouth advertising as we prepare for our opening. It will be a fun and exciting place with great food, good prices, and state of the art technology.

Sincerely RC Floyd Enterprises

390 Ryan February 13, 2013 at 2:30 pm

@Sam – I SO hope that’s true! I love Logan’s.

391 Sam February 13, 2013 at 11:12 am

Someone at Kmart said Sagebrush is to be a Logans Roadhouse…who know if its true…what are your thoughts?

392 Fran February 12, 2013 at 2:42 pm

I’d like to know about SC Latitudes also. Their webpage still has February and its got an application on it because they are hiring. All seems funny with nothing going on. I emailed them last week on their webpage and posted on their FB page that …its February, so when are you opening? No response from either. Hope it didn’t fall through. I was really looking forward to them opening.

393 Taiter February 12, 2013 at 12:39 pm

Is Chutnee closing or is it just temporarily closed for renovations? I would hate to see it go. Their food is definitely authentic Indian.

394 Lou February 11, 2013 at 9:31 pm

Welcome Mary Anne! Hope you do come to Florence! We’ve come a long way and have a long way yet to go but we’re gettin’ there. :)

395 Margaret February 11, 2013 at 8:47 pm

I Facebooked a rep for Publix on Saturday and asked if there was any word of Florence, SC possibly getting a Publix. His response was:

Margaret, I do not have any information on a location in that area. However, I will pass on your desire for one to the proper people. Thank you! » Jacob

Nice canned answer!

396 MaryAnneFloyd February 11, 2013 at 9:50 am

We have visited the Florence SC area several times over the past few years. We are a Senior Couple tossing around the idea of re-locating there. This website has given us some idea of what is going on for the future of Florence. Thank you

397 Wendy February 10, 2013 at 8:50 pm

Went to The Clay Pot Coffee Shop for lunch. Loved it! I did have some trouble finding it and parking. It is at the corner of Cheves and Dargan, downtown, across from the new construction (I think the new Florence Hotel). I parked in the back, in the Pee Dee Mental Health parking lot. The special was Chili with salad and bread. The food was great and loved the “small town feel” inside. They are working on a patio in the back. Nice place to just relax and eat good food!

398 Lou February 10, 2013 at 6:45 pm

@Maddie….A hotel is being built by 1720 and as for Southern Latitudes, I don’t exactly get that either. They still say February as a target date but that doesn’t seem possible. I was told by one of their neighboring businesses last night that it’s supposed to be May so who knows. Maybe they’ll update us on here. Southern Latitudes…can you update us on your progress please?

And thanks @Jon for the info. Someone on FB shared a picture of their rating so it could have easily been outdated. I like that website you shared; good to know these things.

399 Maddie February 10, 2013 at 8:12 am

Does anyone know what is going to be built next to 1720 Burger Bar? The land has been cleared out, hoping it isn’t a bigger parking lot.

Also, I keep reading that Southern Latitudes is opening in the old Primetime location but I drive by there several times everyday and have yet to see any activity going on in the building. Even the real estate sign is still out front indicating the space is Available. What’s the story there?

400 Jon February 9, 2013 at 10:12 pm

According to http://www.scdhec.gov/environment/envhealth/food/htm/inspection-rating/ they have a 92, and a 100 rating. Not saying you are wrong, it could possible be outdated.

401 Lou February 9, 2013 at 8:20 pm

Ditto the Carraba’s. They are owned by Outback …or so I’m told… so maybe we could appeal to our local Outback for them to consider. Also, I recently ate a place in Charlotte called Brixx Pizza. Would like to see them here as well and mentioned it to the franchise owner who said they would look into it. Are starting to open some franchises in SC and he seemed genuinely interested in Florence as a possibilty but, of course, it wouldn’t really be anytime soon.

I don’t know if this is the kind of thing that’s ok to post here or not so if I do something wrong Flossip, I apologize. But I wanted to pass along the fact that apparently Sakura Japanese Restaurant has recently recieved a C rating. Not good.

402 Ford February 9, 2013 at 7:58 pm

The old Sagebrush has been bought. Any ideas by who?

403 Tammy C February 9, 2013 at 4:38 pm

I would like to see Carrabba’s and Dave & Busters open in Florence, SC

404 Kirk February 8, 2013 at 4:58 pm

re: Chutnee, we drove by them today and they have a sign on the door saying they are remodeling and will be open soon. Crossing fingers!

We also went past the new Cuban Cafe on Cashua which now looks open and had several cars there during lunchtime. Would love to hear any trip reports. Will probably try to get out there ourselves before too long.

405 Tim February 8, 2013 at 10:49 am

Good news for now. Florence Morning News reporting that the Barnes & Noble in town will not be on the list for closing.

http://www.scnow.com/news/business/article_c2e7316e-7174-11e2-9b54-001a4bcf6878.html

406 Tamela February 8, 2013 at 5:25 am

I work at Johnson Controls and I would LOVE if more restaurants were out this way. Money would not be an issue for the business due to our 100′s of employees. I get tired of bringing my lunch :)

407 Lou February 7, 2013 at 9:47 pm

@ Cheryl……I have no idea and really don’t have any reason to know unless I happened to hear about it like anyone else might.

408 Cheryl February 5, 2013 at 7:12 pm

Dear Lou:

Is it true that they are going to be putting a Whole Foods or EarthFare here in Florence??? Can you please let me know?? Would be so exciting!!!!

Thanks,
Cheryl

409 Tim February 3, 2013 at 8:17 pm

Thanks Lou.

410 Lou February 3, 2013 at 7:44 pm

@ Fran’s comment: Since we here seem to hear/see things probably sooner than others then its our place to spread the word!
…….Having said that, I think it’s worth noting that it was here on Flossip’s site that there was first confirmation that Chipotle Grill was being built beside Buffalo Wild Wings. Pee Dee Foodie takes the credit for it on his site but I think credit ought to go where credit is due. Thanks again, Flossip, for your hard work at keeping this site the gem that it is and providing a place for the rest of us to share information and news and, in some cases, even support for each other as Tim points out. I’m sure when he gets his place going, he’ll aleady have some good, established support as well among his Flossip friends. :)

411 Scot February 2, 2013 at 10:05 pm

NANCY J. LE VINE, I know of no successful franchise that would make a statement that their business “WILL NOT BE EVER PUT IN FLORENCE.” “NOT BE EVER” (poor grammar aside) is a bit too permanent. To make such a statement would be asinine as successful businesses always locate in growing markets. There is no way to predict what the future may hold. In the meantime, I suggest you research iternet courtesy and stop yelling when you post.

412 Lou February 2, 2013 at 1:57 pm

Too bad we don’t have a ‘like’ button on here. :)

413 Fran January 31, 2013 at 10:33 pm

Tim…I’m with you 100%! If we the people of Florence or Flossipians can’t help out then how can we expect others. Since we here seem to hear/see things probably sooner than others then its our place to spread the word! I am really excited and until you open your place, my husband already said…sounds like a place we would like and patronize. We’d love to meet up with you and your wife sometime once they open! :) Maybe have a Flossip meet and greet ..hehe.

414 Tim January 31, 2013 at 3:23 pm

The question now is, what are we, the Flossipians, going to do to help this new venture succeed? I will tell everyone that I am not in any way associated with Southern Lattitudes but feel that we need to support local businesses that keep dollars here locally. I want this place to succeed. I want it a place that my wife and I can go on a Thursday, Friday, Monday night and socialize with friends. I want it to be a place to bring my out of town guests when they come to visit.

415 Fran January 31, 2013 at 1:54 pm

Thanks Tammy! Happy to hear/see someone opening up there. That place has been empty too long! And yes…they have a facebook page and it says the address there. I’m excited! Something that is opening beside a dollar store or bank

416 Tammy January 30, 2013 at 10:11 pm

Be sure to check out Southern Latitudes – http://www.sclatitudes.com/index.html. I believe they are opening in February in the old Prime Time location.

417 Lou January 30, 2013 at 7:03 pm

I agree with Fran! :)

Also, I notice there’s some land clearing around mile marker 163 on 1-95. Wonder what’s up with that?

418 Fran January 30, 2013 at 3:36 pm

@ Nancy Levine….if you want good NY style pizza, thin crust and oven baked, you have to give Rebel Pie a try! Best pizza in the area in my opinion!

419 Charles January 30, 2013 at 7:18 am

Thanks NANCY DEVINE. We knew that last week and it was reported over a month ago that it was to be a Chipotle’s. And please type like a grown-up and stop yelling at everyone.

420 Alan Cooke January 29, 2013 at 11:19 pm

Hi All, just wanted to let everyone know that Rebel Pie is now open for lunch Tues.-Sat. 11:30-2:00. Come join us for some Wood Fired Brick Oven Pizza! Thanks :-)

http://www.facebook.com/rebelpie

421 NANCY J. LE VINE January 29, 2013 at 8:05 pm

JUST SO ALL OF YOU THAT HAD AND HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT IS BEING BUILT ACROSS FROM THE CHUCKY CHEESE PLACE, I PERSONALLY DROVE BY (PURPOSELY) AND ASKED THE CONSTRUCTION HEAD GUY WHAT IS THIS GOING TO BE: HE TOLD ME A CHIPOLTE RESTAURANT. SO THERE IT IS FOLKS. PROBLEM SOLVED, AND CURIOUSITY SETTLED. I ALSO HEARD FROM A RELIABLE SOURCE THAT ” HOOTERS ” WILL NOT BE EVER PUT IN FLORENCE. THAT TAKES CARE OF THAT MESS. SO NOW WE KNOW. HAVE FUN EATING AT CHIPOLTE. I HATE THAT PLACE. RED BOWL IS MY FAVORATE AND STEFANOS’ FOR GOOD PIZZA. ALSO TRY “MELLOW MUSHROOM”. NOT TOO BAD, BUT NOT LIKE THE ALMOST NEW YORK STYLE PIZZA FROM STEPHANOS’. GOOD LUCK KIDS !

422 Tim January 28, 2013 at 1:47 pm

Fran et al, it’s all good. I’m just thinking of ways we can support those businesses that are already here in the greater Florence area so that they don’t end up going away. Btw, I just read that Barnes & Noble is going to trim its number of stores by 30% over the next 10 years. I don’t want the Florence B&N on that list. http://www.nbcnews.com/business/barnes-noble-expects-trim-30-its-stores-over-next-10-1C8137477

423 Fran January 28, 2013 at 12:01 pm

@Tim…sounds like a plan to me but with working in Hartsville by the time I get home, especially until it is light later and warmer, I usually stay home during the week. Friday evening or the week ends we are usually looking to go out and do. So if I don’t have to go on the specific day I would go that week when we could, if that works.

424 Tim January 28, 2013 at 10:28 am

Hey all,

In support of local restaurants and to help keep Florence as vibrant as possible, what if we were to try to promote a specific restaurant on a specific day for all the Flossip readers to patronize? For example, Thursday could be Cook Out (or any other restaurant) day this week and we would all try to patronize them to help keep them going.

The thought being that it is a concerted effort to help publicize our local establishments. I’m just thinking out loud. Thoughts?

425 JM January 25, 2013 at 9:39 pm
426 Alissa January 23, 2013 at 9:16 pm

I heard that Chutnee was just doing remodeling and will be open again soon!

427 Julie January 23, 2013 at 5:43 pm

If we get another dollar general i may scream. It is a quick in and out place in a hurry but seriously how many do we need? I sure hope that is not what’s coming but the area they are clearing looks about the right size for that. wow.

428 Fran January 23, 2013 at 4:36 pm

Oh no!..Say its not so Tim, please!!! They are going to have to change the name of this town from Florence, SC to Dollar Stores, SC. Every empty spot is turning into a Dollar General or Family Dollar. You get all excited because something is coming and poof! another Dollar Store :(

429 Tim January 23, 2013 at 3:07 pm

I heard today on pretty good authority that the construction happening on Second Loop Road is going to be yet another Dollar General store. Ugh.

430 Andy January 22, 2013 at 10:19 pm

It appears that the Chutney Indian restaurant on Palmetto (next to the Drive-In) has closed. My gf had been wanting to go back recently, but noticed it was never open when she drove past several days in the past couple of weeks. We drove over on Saturday evening and it was dark. Also looked like people were working on equipment in the back (possibly moving stuff out).

431 Ryan January 21, 2013 at 8:12 pm

I was riding down S. Cashua yesterday and noticed a sign that said “Coming Soon – Cuba Cafe”. It’s near Ann’s Taste of Thai and on that side of the road. It’s closer to the Second Loop intersection. I can’t name the plaza, because it’s not a familiar one of mine.

432 Wendy January 18, 2013 at 7:53 pm

When I first moved here 7 years ago, I actually e-mailed Publix requesting them to open here, but they said that they were not looking to buy land here at that time. I am excited to read that they may come here, I love their Deli!

433 Lou January 16, 2013 at 7:07 pm

And a Carraba’s. :)

434 Beverly Wilkes January 15, 2013 at 10:30 pm

I would love to see a Publix here . Also would love a Fresh Market. Both would be wonderful additions for our city.

435 Jeremy Davis January 14, 2013 at 8:38 pm

Also wanted to ask if there is any staffing/hiring information available for Florence Hotel or other new downtown projects available?

Just moved here late last year and am anxiously looking forward to finding employment.

Just wanted to say that I’ve been reaching out to old business contacts to invest in Florence (I think it’s a great time to invest in the downtown). I will let you know if those go anywhere beyond interest.

436 Jeremy Davis January 14, 2013 at 8:32 pm

Just wanted to comment on the Dave and Busters rumor above.

I promoted the Greenville/Spartanburg area to Dave & Buster’s two years ago, and they said that GSP doesn’t have anywhere near the population for them to bring in a D&B’s there, so I highly doubt Florence would be an option for them. So more than likely, Hooter’s.

437 Ryan January 14, 2013 at 12:43 pm

Fran, I believe I heard a while back that Victor’s was closing their restaurant to move into Hotel Florence. It could have changed since then. though.

438 Fran January 14, 2013 at 12:36 pm

Big article in the Sunday paper about the Hotel Florence planning on being open in April. Victor’s will be going into the bottom floor. Anyone know if they are closing their place on Irby to move and when they might be closing?

Also just saw on FB Florence Chamber posted:
Seven new Façade restoration projects approved for the downtown district! It’s awesome to see the Florence Downtown coming to life before our eyes! It’s going to look great!

Love hearing about the renevation and really hoping it can become something nice!

439 CDeeRON January 14, 2013 at 10:32 am

Anyone have info on the Cuban restaurant opening on Cashua?

440 The Flossip January 14, 2013 at 10:31 am

Thanks Holly for the update.

441 Holly January 14, 2013 at 10:23 am

George’s closed, just drove by yesterday.

442 Shannon January 14, 2013 at 7:30 am

It is still disappointing. All three Piggly Wigglys were sold and one is not profittable. I have to think it’s more profittable than the one on Cherokee. Perhaps they own that land as well while Second Loop was leased. I doubt it was based only on poor performance and probably was based on the landholder/ leasor as well.

Almost like what happened to Books-a-Million. The leasor refused to correct the problems and just put band-aids on everything, knowing that they can get more rent from a new tenant once the lease runs out. I don’t think Ulta is doing much better. I hope something like PW replaces PW. 50 people lost their jobs and those are hard to find.

443 Jennifer January 12, 2013 at 10:12 am

It would be nice to have a McAlister’s Deli or Jason’s Deli (http://www.jasonsdeli.com) somewhere on or near Celebration Blvd. Also for people interested in a different type of fitness or hobby place, an indoor climbing gym would literally…um, rock!! I used to go to this place in Greenville called “Rocks and Ropes” and really miss doing things like that locally. (http://www.rocksandropes.net/) An old building in downtown could possibly be converted into a climbing gym. It would make a good place to “hang out!!” Anyway…just some ideas for anyone looking into bringing new things to our town. ;)

444 Tim January 11, 2013 at 3:45 pm

I suppose that’s good news. Any word on the Second Loop activity? Looks like they’re doing something substantial. Perhaps more than a dollar store.

445 John January 11, 2013 at 12:50 pm

It has to be Chipotle…that page on Preit Website on Magnolia Mall used to just say proposed restaurant, now it says Proposed Chipotle Mexican Grill…that was changed this past week.

446 Tim January 11, 2013 at 11:48 am

Pig on Second Loop was sold by corporate Piggly Wiggly to an investor group. The group bought many stores, some of which were not profitable (Second Loop), in order to get the one’s that were profitable. They have made a decision to close the unprofitable stores that they now own to help make the other one’s even more profitable. Not saying it’s right or wrong, just informing everyone what actually happened.

Also, anyone know what’s going up next to Buffalo Wild Wings at Magnolia Mall? Is it going to be the long-rumored Chipotle or something else?

447 Fran January 9, 2013 at 2:30 pm

Bryan…great idea about talking things up here and trying to make Florence a great place to live!
I am crossing my fingers that Publix shows up here..we use to live in Aiken and sure do miss them the last 6yrs we have been here!

As for 2nd Loop…I agree, we do not need another Dollar Store or Bank! I can’t believe there are enough people here to support them all I mean they couldn’t support a Piggly Wiggly! I can’t believe they are closing!

448 Hotel man January 8, 2013 at 5:40 pm

The lot beside 1720 burger Bar is going to be whaattt… another hotel. it is planned to be a Home 2 Suites by Hilton.

449 Ryan January 8, 2013 at 5:29 pm

Yeah, Tim, I could certainly see something we really don’t need, like a Family Dollar, Dollar General, or a nail salon going there. What has happened to new stores and ideas?!

450 Tim January 8, 2013 at 5:18 pm

From what I can tell, it doesn’t look like the site will be big enough for a Trader Joe’s. Maybe it is a fast food restaurant or, more likely, some crappy pawn shop or dollar general. Ugh.

451 Ryan January 8, 2013 at 4:56 pm

This can’t be, so I can only dream that Trader Joe’s is going up at that Second Loop lot. We really need a fast food place on Second Loop. While there are McDonalds’, Burger King’s and Wendys’ in the general area, I’d like one more convenient for residents who live off of Second Loop like me!

452 Tim January 8, 2013 at 2:24 pm

Looks like there’s a new building going up on Second Loop. They have the foundation outlined and are beginning to get ready for the footings.

453 Timmysmom5 January 8, 2013 at 12:00 pm

Anybody know what’s going on in the empty lot on Second Loop Road? There were people out there surveying or something this morning. It’s the lot where the old skate park used to be, kind of near Pizza Hut takeout.
Also, what’s going on at Ruby’s orner? There are stakes all around like it has been sold.

454 Grier Horstmann January 8, 2013 at 11:08 am

Spell check on my last post!!!….Proprietorship! (gotta love auto-correct!)

455 Grier Horstmann January 8, 2013 at 11:05 am

Corona is still alive and kickin’ under new proprietorasship. They are working really hard to improve the atmosphere and the food, and it’s working! Everything I’ve ordered has been fresh and yummy! They have a chicken and rice soup (not on the menu) that is just what the doctor ordered when you’re feeling under the weather. Hunks of white meat chicken and rice in broth, topped with just enough pico de gallo to add a little sinus-opening heat! My new favorite is a fresh spinach quesedilla with fajita style grilled peppers, mushrooms, and onions. (also not on the menu…they make it at my request!) You can add chicken or shrimp if you like, but it’s perfect just like it is! They are such nice people, and are so eager to please. Try them again. They’ll definitely be one of your new-old favorites!

456 Tim January 7, 2013 at 11:18 am

I also heard that a sports park, mostly soccer fields, is going to be built near I95 and Hwy76. If this is true, what sorts of development do you think we’ll see at that exit? I would like to think that we’ll have a new hotel or two, probably some more eating establishments and maybe some light retail. If this happens I will be the first to say good riddance to much of the garbage that is out that way now.

457 Tim January 7, 2013 at 11:12 am

I see that they have started construction (or at least lot clearing, etc) in the lot next to Buffalo Wild Wings at Magnolia Mall. Is this the long-rumored Chipotle coming to town or something completely different? Additionally, I see that there is a sold sign on the lot next to the small strip mall where La Bamba and Burger Bar is. Anyone know of anything going on there?

Finally, I know that I mentioned awhile back that the former PrimeTime was sold and a new bar/restaurant was to open there in mid-January. However, I haven’t seen any activity at the site. Did I maybe have my information wrong on the time frame?

458 Lou January 5, 2013 at 10:03 pm

Have tried Struttin Turkey. Not impressed. In fact, rather disappointed. First of all, they advertise that they have sandwiches and all sorts of options yet they wouldn’t let me get just a sandwich; the only choice we had was to eat from the buffet. However, that did allow me to try various things and I hate to say it but there was nothing I had that was worth a second trip. Would be interested to hear others’ opinions.

459 Jawaun McClam January 5, 2013 at 4:53 pm

I love the mindset Bryan has! I agree with him!

460 jackie January 4, 2013 at 8:33 am

Were getting a Chipolte in front of the mall sometime this year

461 Lou January 3, 2013 at 9:29 pm

Sounds like a good plan to me Bryan. Where do we begin?

462 Bryan January 3, 2013 at 3:29 pm

Long time browser first time poster, got some pretty good news on the Publix front. They are indeed looking at building Florence received an email yesterday from the gentleman over location planning. I believe this forum is a very good place where we can come up with companies we believe should come here. Prime example there are smaller cities with stores such as Dillards ex Anderson….small population smaller mall but have a Dillards or like Aiken I hear they are getting a Lowes foods. So lets be proactive come up with are list and start bombarding these places to let them know we have the population and the resources to support these companie. It’s 2013 lets make Florence the city that we all know it has the potential to be.

463 Ryan January 3, 2013 at 3:06 pm

Sweetleigh’s is SO GOOD! Well worth the money.

464 Lou January 2, 2013 at 11:33 pm

Congratulations on your Rebel Pie win Flossip! Great pizza!

And just a plug for Sweetleigh’s Cakes….if you haven’t tried them, you should. Awesome cakes! They make jar cakes that are for sale weekly , I think, at Sweet Serenity. If not weekly…often. Their FB page will tell you when he (owner Mark Palmer) takes more jar cakes to Sweet Serenity and what kind he takes. A must try!

465 Amy Lauren January 1, 2013 at 3:32 pm

A Publix would be wonderful in Florence, at the Pig’s location. I always thought that store did a good business though, really weird to see it close.

Our World Market here is across from our mall, but I’ve never seen one in a mall either. I would hate for those stores to close, I actually like Magnolia Mall a lot better than Citadel Mall here in Chas (it’s dated and so many stores have closed or moved to the outlets).

467 M. December 30, 2012 at 10:39 pm

!!!! I cannot believe Anne has passed! Does anyone know what happened? I sure hope the restaurant stays open, always great food, and great service by Anne and her staff, I will miss her!

468 Ryan December 30, 2012 at 3:11 pm

Sandra, the owner, Ann, died on Christmas Day.

Any idea what happened to Anne’s Kitchen? Was closed due to family emergency and today there are funeral flowers at the front door? Wonderful place and the family is so nice.

Hate to see The Pig close on 2nd Loop. It always makes me worry that when stores like that close, more things at the same location will start closing up as well and leave another vacated lot. Hopefully Publix or something equally as good will consider that location soon.

If you’re interested in Struttin’ Turkey, I found out they have a menu on their FB page. Click in the area around where their address is and it will bring their menu up. It looks very good as far as what they will have.

471 Ryan December 28, 2012 at 11:10 pm

While they would be absolutely wonderful, I can’t see a World Market or HH Gregg coming to the Magnolia Mall. I haven’t seen either of those connected to malls. Dillard’s might work, but it’s a higher class store and I can’t see it lasting long. Same with Macy’s but it probably wouldn’t last as long as Dillard’s. With talk like this, I’m afraid sooner or later the mall is going to turn into Hilton Head’s Shelter Cove Mall, where all retailers bail out of it. Since the department stores are the main attraction to the mall, the inside retailers might unfortunately lose business. Wish the Celebration Blvd. idea would have gone as planned :/
As for the Piggly Wiggly space, a Publix would be excellent! That plaza is also showing it’s age :(
I certainly hope that the mall doesn’t close, I’m just stating a scenario.

472 Fran December 28, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Wow..sorry to see that Pig closing! It was really convenient and a nice one too! But I agree…I would love to see a Publix open there! Well..I can dream :)

Hmmmm,….all four of these stores are in our mall. IF they were all to close maybe it would go like this. (Just Dreaming!)

Sears – Dillards
JCPenny – Macy’s
Best Buy – World Market OR HH Gregg

Yep the Pig on 2nd Loop is closing and they are moving the pharmacy to the location at the Florence Mall

475 Lou December 28, 2012 at 2:34 pm

Struttin’ Turkey opens today.

476 will December 28, 2012 at 1:05 pm

Manager at the Pig on 2nd loop says the store will be closing on Jan. 11.

Would be a nice spot for a Publix!

477 John December 27, 2012 at 11:59 pm

Proposed Chipotle Grill….here’s proof even though they replied to me saying there wasn’t one planned…hmmmm? http://www.preit.com/leasing/detail/plans/29

478 Lou December 25, 2012 at 12:49 pm

Hope everyone has/had a wonderful Christmas! Flossip…thank you for your site and looking forward to another year! :)

479 Lou December 22, 2012 at 9:51 pm

@J……that would definitely hurt business! lol

480 J. December 22, 2012 at 9:42 pm

Roma Oven closed a few months ago, besides they were rude and did not really care for the customers at all.

481 Lou December 21, 2012 at 11:57 pm

Was told today that the place on Pamplico near Sweet Frog with the Myami license in the window is for a nail salon rather than another restaurant. The same family owns that Nail Artisan place on David McLeod Blvd. and are apparently opening another location. This isn’t exactly confirmed but it does make more sense given the size.

Also, Roma Oven has closed. “Available’ sign out front.

And didn’t someone post that Corona’s had closed awhile back? It’s still open so did I misunderstand that one?

Flossip…..love the new logo! :)

Is there anywhere in Florence for middle aged people to go out and have a few drinks and dance that is not a sports bar?

483 Jawaun December 15, 2012 at 10:15 pm

Men’s Wearhouse is now open! Grand Opening!! Near Petsmart!

484 Lou December 14, 2012 at 9:51 pm

Thanks Larry! That certainly clears things up doesn’t it? lol I have to admit I’m a little surprised cause they don’t seem to have a constant, busy business enough to warrant opening a second place and like Fran said, it will certainly be much smaller. I do hope that’s the case though rather than moving.

485 Fran December 14, 2012 at 12:30 pm

Plus that place would be much smaller I think than where they are now?

486 Fran December 14, 2012 at 12:29 pm

Hmm..I think its great since I live in S. Florence and like Myami’s but wonder if it is a 2nd place or if they are just moving? Hate to see empty buildings when places just move.

488 Fran December 13, 2012 at 3:28 pm

Just heard from a good source that Pita Pit is looking to open in Florence and they are looking at something on 2nd Loop.

489 Lou December 12, 2012 at 9:06 pm

@Larry….had lunch at Myami’s today and asked two people who work there and they knew nothing about opening another restaurant. I know that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not happeing but is it possible you misread the name?

490 larry December 10, 2012 at 8:46 pm

Miyami Japanese is coming to the shopping center with Sweet Frog and Jimmy John’s on Pamp. Hwy. There’s a business license permit in the window.

491 Fran December 7, 2012 at 2:34 pm

@Shannon you seem to have an inside connection :) So….I heard Publix was looking at a lot on Celebration but it got tied up in litigation? Do I have something to look forward to? Is Publix looking to come to Florence?

492 Ashley December 5, 2012 at 10:53 am

Forgot to mention…. With Big Lots, It would be nice for them to be some where new and start fresh but like I said before with the staff that don’t have honor or whatever in where they work it will just be more space for them to not clean up. Unless management does something and gets rid of people like the one they have who doesn’t put anything away properly and feels it isn’t his/her responsibility to leave the register to clean or even answer a phone, then things will be the same they are now just in more space.

493 Ashley December 5, 2012 at 8:26 am

Sorry I haven’t read the comments here in a bit.
Umm, I have been to Out of Bounds. It is like every other bar in this town. I wouldn’t call it a grill because they don’t really supply food, it is more like if while you are drinking if you want to snack on something they will tell you what they have on hand at the moment and you can pick. This is an area of the business that needs a bit of work. On the bar side of things, they have the basics in bottles and drafts and the last time I heard they were trying to expand their types of mixed drinks and shots available. The owners really want to fix up the place and make it better since they took over but unfortunately I think the people in this town that look to be bartenders and such just don’t show the drive to help a business be better they are just looking at the money they can take home in that day, but if the staff would help the owners get things where they want it they could make more money because more people would go.
Opps sorry for my soapbox there…

494 shannon December 5, 2012 at 7:36 am

@Ryan Big Lots is not moving as of now. Apparently the lease negotiations fell apart. Something about the new facility changing the agreement already negotiated. Besides Publix would never go where the old Wal-Mart was anyway.

495 Ryan December 4, 2012 at 9:28 pm

What happened to the Big Lots move? I can’t wait for them to move to a nicer, more convenient place, but I would also like to see a grocery store like Publix in the old Walmart space, too.

496 Shannon December 3, 2012 at 7:17 am

@Fran. I heard from a very reputable source that Chipotle’s is coming. As to Soapy Rides I think they were connected to the Sweepstakes place next door to make it look legitimate. I’ve noticed that most of the Sweepstakes places that were open closed after a few got raided.

497 Ryan December 2, 2012 at 2:06 pm

Went to Jersey Boyz Pizzaria yesterday and the pizza was awesome! It reminds me of Primo’s at Verandah Cafe. The atmosphere is fair, but it’s a bit small.

498 janet matthews December 2, 2012 at 1:22 pm

what is up with the soapy rides car wash? i haven’t seen it operating lately. are they closed in the cold weather?

499 Monica in SC December 1, 2012 at 7:16 am

Looks like George’s Funnel Cakes, near Irby Street Walmart is closed.

500 Lou November 30, 2012 at 8:36 pm
