What to do this weekend:

in Things to do in Florence, SC

I know you are not sitting there silently telling me that there isn’t anything to do this weekend!  There is  A LOT!

Tomorrow night is opening night for “Inherit the Wind” at Florence Little Theatre.  Tickets are on sale TODAY! Call the Florence Little Theatre box office for tickets – 662-3731. The performance goes through next Saturday so you have this option on Friday and Saturday night as well as Sunday afternoon.

Inherit the Wind is a fictionalized account of the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial, which resulted in John T. Scopes‘s conviction for teaching Charles Darwin‘s theory of evolution to a high school science class, contrary to a Tennessee state law that prohibited the teaching of evolution. The fictional characters Matthew Harrison Brady, Henry Drummond, Bertram Cates and E. K. Hornbeck correspond to the historical figures of William Jennings BryanClarence Darrow, Scopes, and H. L. Mencken, respectively. However, the playwrights state in a note at the opening of the play that it is not meant to be an historical account.[2] Their intent was to criticize the then current state of McCarthyism or anti-Communist investigations of the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HCUA) and SenatorJoseph McCarthy. The authors used the historical Scopes trial as the background for a drama that comments on and explores the threats to intellectual freedompresented by the anti-communist hysteria. In 1996 Lawrence commented in an interview that, “we used the teaching of evolution as a parable, a metaphor for any kind of mind control [...] It’s not about science versus religion. It’s about the right to think.” [1].

The Pee Dee Heart Walk is Saturday morning at Francis Marion. I did not go to Francis Marion (hint!), and last years walk was my first real introduction to how beautiful the campus is. I will be there on Saturday with 2000 of my closest friends. It is not too late for you to join us! Visit the Pee Dee Heart Walk website for more details.

After the heart walk, you can head over the the Ovis Hill Farm Festival. If you have kids, they will love it– but there is a great farm store for the adults.

You can also check out the Triple R Farms Corn Maze. I’m a little tad bit claustrophobic, so I’ll let you go through the maze, but I love this local option!

The last Florence after 5 of the Season is Friday night. 3 Day Funk will be the featured band. This band is a local favorite and I’m sure you know someone in the band! The City will have a FREE (read: FREE) pumpkin patch for the kids. This is a double bonus because you get to feel cool WHILE your kids are having fun too. There will be free treats, games, and inflatables. The Concert is free as well, so there is literally NO excuse for you to not go. If you are still in the mood to hang out after Florence after Five, Alchemy will be hosting their 1st annual Scream Party across the street. They will have a costume contest with cash prizes and DJ Jay T will be on hand to play your favorite music. (I almost typed spin your favorite tunes, but I think that would clearly age me.)

Remember to tell them you read about it on theflossip.com!! Thanks for reading!
