Hotel Florence

in Downtown

I am fascinated with “Hotel Florence“, the new hotel that will be downtown.  I truly believe that downtown needs a major anchor– and if this hotel and Victor’s are downtown?  I think that will seal the deal on a positive future for downtown.  With the Art Trail Gallery, the new Italian restaurant, the Thai House, the Performing Arts Center– wow.  Like the Facebook page for more information on the hotel and its progress.

Now– if they can just get someone to bring a “real bar”.  That is what Mr. Flossip calls a bar with teak wood, televisions scattered about, and plenty of room to both stand and/or sit… we will be set.

Pretty soon it will be time for me to start counting down to the Pecan Festival!

Remember to tell them you read about it on theflossip.com!! Thanks for reading!

Love your blog!

Sorry if the question’s a bit random… maybe you know what happened to the old Hotel Florence? As seen in this postcard http://www.cardcow.com/300376/hotel-florence-south-carolina/ Does the building still exist? I’m interested in Florence’s past but I’m not of these parts so I can’t go and see for myself…

GeorgeAnne – It’s called Da Massimo Restaurante Italiano and it’s located in the space formerly occupied by Alchemy. We have an audio and written review on our foodie blog, as well as a photo gallery. Let us know if you’d like any menu suggestions if you check it out.

There was someone talking on the Rumors blog about wanting to open a “nice bar” downtown. Guess he will be denied also. The downtown development are going to have to loosen their grip if they expect to make some thing down there. It needs nice shops, restaurants, bars…places for people to want to walk around and stop by! They have started with the places on Dargan and the Hotel but they are going to need alot more there. Atleast in my humble opinion.

If you’re wanting to check out the progress on this hotel (demolition & construction has already started) then I suggest stopping by next week Friday, July 27 during Florence After Five. STUFF the Bus, a school supply drive organized by United Way, Rita’s, BRAVO!, 4 Monkeys & Cumulus, will be setting up a whole Children’s Play Area in the Breezeway! Arts & crafts, games, prizes, visits from a couple of local mascots – just a lot of fun! Don’t forget to bring a supply donation!

BTW – I love this blog! Most favorite!

Several developers have proposed a brewpub downtown, but it was rejected several times by the downtown development people. Southern Hops was going to go down there, but they were rejected as well. Instead, they put their restaurant just outside the city limits so the city can’t get any of their tax revenue.

Not sure about the teak, but it will have a distinct bar area per Suzanne Galloway, director of catering for Victor’s. She and Laurie Crouse of Top Hat were on the Pee Dee Food Show last night. That episode will hit iTunes and our blog on 07/27 with lots more scoop!
