WIN WIN WIN!!! Tickets to the Oyster Roast!

by The Flossip on October 24, 2012

in Things to do in Florence, SC

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS EVENT!  This year?  I love it even more because the Museum is donating TWO TICKETS TO GIVE AWAY!  This never happens!  That is a $130.00 value.  You can take a date, a friend, your mom (yes, Mom… I am taking you.) This contest ENDS on Monday at 2:22 p.m.  (Yes that is a bizarre and random time!)

How can you win?  Easy!  First you have to go to the Museum website and come back and comment on one thing you learned about the museum.  Please don’t just copy someone else’s work.  It wasn’t nice in school and it isn’t nice now.   You can get an additional comment if you share this post on twitter or facebook.  Leave another comment that says “Twitter!” or “Facebook!”  I will be checking those when I do the random number generator so .. don’t cheat.  This means you can get up to a total of THREE ENTRIES.  One mandatory comment about the museum website, one comment proving you linked this post on twitter, and one comment showing that you linked this on facebook. EASY!!!

The Oyster Roast is November 1st, from 6:30-9:00 p.m.

Please join the Trustees of the Florence Museum for an evening of fun and refreshments. Brunswick Stew, Hors d’Oeuvres, & Oysters catered by Ben Moise will be provided. There will also be bluegrass music by Borrowed Time. Tickets are $65 per person for non museum members, and $50 per person for museum members. Each ticket also includes 2 complimentary drinks.

Funds from the Annual Oyster Roast are used to assist the museum in properly maintaining the collections through conservation and restoration. These artifacts are then used to tell the story of Florence County and the Pee Dee Region.

Additionally, proceeds from the Oyster Roast are used to help support educational programming with hands on activities for students in both summer camps and miscellaneous school programs and projects.

For more information about sponsorship opportunities or to purchase tickets please contact museum trustee, Becky Crawford at 843-665-7727 or contact a member of theBoard of Trustees.

Remember to tell them you read about it on theflossip.com!! Thanks for reading!

The museum has a permanent collection of William Johnson’s( not on the website-he was the uncle of one of the deacons at my church and I did not know they had his work so this was nice to know) work- 2 paper drawings and 3 oil paintings from different times throughout his artistic life.

Our boys love having lunch on the “picnic train” as they call it, but we’ve never been in the museum. I think it’s neat that they have events for children at the museum. We’ll definitely have to check it out!

They have an SC gallery that features painting and art by SC artists. This gallery also shows furnishings made by slaves during the antebellum period.

One of the most interesting facts from their website is represented in their Pueblo Pottery Collection. This collection comprises the first grouping of objects collected by the Florence Museum and were collected by the museum founder, Miss Jane Beverly Evans.

In the museum’s World War hall they have several items from the Florence Army Air base which was operated during WWII.

I learned that the museum has an extensive civil war display, including the Dr. Francis Lord collection! He was an avid collector of rare and one-of-a-kind books and documents from the war from what I understand.

I have lived in Florence many years and I remember as a kid my mom riding by the Florence Museum. I always wanted to go there but have yet to make a trip :( ! I learned the Florence Museum offers hands on educational facts about South Carolina for kids to have fun and learn. I have three kids so I think that is GREAT!!
