in Things to do in Florence, SC

Last year, we had a small garden in the summertime. I was pretty successful with cherry tomatoes and bell peppers. This year I would like to expand it a little bit. It was really a fluke that anything actually grew. What do you recommend for a small garden? When should I begin?

Remember to tell them you read about it on theflossip.com!! Thanks for reading!

Contact the extension office and talk with Tony Melton. He will get you going in the right directions. Everything from dates to varieties.

The first step though is to take a soil sample, it is a $6 fee and will give you recommendations on fertilizers you may or may not need.

I want to start growing herbs. We have a big pot of mint growing right now.

Zucchini grow well in this area and pretty really easy. Produces relatively quickly too.

Cucumbers, squash, and blueberries are easy to grow here in SC.

We do herbs and peppers. Can’t go wrong with them. From rosemary to basil, marjoram to thyme, it’s so easy to do and saves so much money when you’re cooking recipes that call for ‘em. And you know you’re going to make something that requires a kick — jalapenos and banana peppers. Those all do well with our not-so demanding garden. We quit tomatoes. Just weren’t successful. We’ll go to the farmer’s market for those.
