Description: almost pure white small female neutered Maltese and Shi-tzu Mix (some grey on ears)

weighing about 8-10 lbs.

Last seen: Friday March 12 at 4pm in Tremont Subdivision at 151 and Bethlel Road across from Rick’s Pawn shop.

She ran out the door unnoticed when we rushed to our Daughter and Grandsons who had been in a car accident. They will be OK; but Haiku is now missing.

We did not discover Haiku missing until we returned home from the doctors around 8pm Friday

The Lucky Dog Ball goes to benefit the Darlington County Humane Society. I know that I have readers from all over the Pee Dee and I encourage everyone to check out this event. The BEST news? It is SO affordable! I love so many fundraising events and hate that I can’t go because of price. This event is $25.00 a person in advance and $35.00 at the door. You can get tickets at Bizzell’s, Burry’s, the Haven, Juice, and by contacting them through their facebook page.

These women have been hard at work putting together an amazing Silent Auction to be held at the ball. Hartsville Furniture, Geoff Hughes, Darlington Racetrack, Flossie Mae’s, Laura Roscoe and many others have contributed to the auction.

The event will be at Prestwood Country Club in Hartsville with music by Crow Jayne. You can hear a sample of their music here.

4 dogs turned up at my parents house. They live near alligator road in the florence/timmonsville/effingham area. One dog is a chocolate lab, female, less than a year old. Another one looks like he has german sheppard in him, but not full. The other two havent gotten close enough to determine anything, but the first two dogs are extremely friendly–very accustomed to humans; very affectionate. They are in good health, so I assume they belong to someone. No collars. My parents live near a very busy highway, and we fear the dogs will get in the road–if you know anything about them, or even if you want to give one a good home, please email me.

This just breaks my heart, this family is devastated after their dog went missing following an accident on I-95.

That’s right. Tomorrow from 4 PM until closing, the Moe’s in Florence will be donating 15% of their sales to the Florence Humane Society.

After writing the last post about needing an emergency vet clinic, I made some calls. I wanted to see if any vet in Florence is taking after hours and/or emergency calls so that you can consider that in choosing a vet. Remember though, a vet can’t work 24/7, so I certainly understand if they are not able to take call after hours on the weekends… it would also mean staff would have to take call– no small undertaking.

Specifically, I called every vet in Florence as well as the Humane Society. The only veterinarian in Florence (based on my discussions with the people answering the phone) is …. Palmetto Animal Hospital. Their number is 667-6720. This is only for established clients, so if this is something you are looking for in a vet, you may want to consider calling Palmetto to discuss this policy. Obviously, if you work at a veterinary office in Florence and your policy is different, please let me know!

Companion told me that they will see established clients until 9:00 p.m. on days that they are open. Every other office told me that they will refer you to the Emergency Vet Clinic in either Columbia or Myrtle Beach (does not appear to have a website and some not so great reviews on google.).

This is not meant to be a criticism in any way. It has to be VERY difficult on the vets to decide to take call or not– they have to have some quality of life balance. It is just to let you know what they told me thier policies are so that you can investigate what works best for you. I think the best answer is for someone to start an actual emergency vet clinic– maybe local vets or maybe some entrepreneurial vets looking for a nice town to start a new business.

I received the following email from reader Amy:

I am an avid follower/reader and love all that you do for Florence and all that Florence has to offer.  Florence has grown into a place with soo much to offer.  Unfortunately though, I realized this past weekend that we are missing something I consider VERY important to our community – an emergency vet.  Over the weekend, the family dog was injured and had to be taken to a vet.  After calling several vet offices and listening to answering machines, we were disappointed to find out that Florence has no after hours care for animals.  You have to drive to either Columbia or Myrtle Beach to see an emergency vet.  We quickly loaded the dog in the car and headed to the Palmetto Regional Emergency Hospital in Columbia.  Upon our arrival, we met several other families who ALSO made the drive from Florence, Hartsville and Darlington just to see a vet.  We all discussed how very unfortunate it was that our vets wouldn’t see animals after hours.  If anyone ever had a serious problem in Florence with their animal, Columbia or Myrtle Beach just wouldn’t be close enough.

I think its a shame that with all Florence has to offer, we do not have a place to take our beloved animals.  Vets in this area are really missing the boat when it comes to after-hours care for animals.  By the time we left last night, there had been more than 10 familes that came through the door, none of which were from Columbia.  I truly wish that the local vets could get together and do something about this.  When it comes to the family pet, it is just that…part of the family.

With the number of friends I have on facebook, I often see status updates about driving to the emergency vet. I remember that years ago there was an emergency vet. He drove here from NC and slept on a cot in the office. I can understand WHY that got old. He took really good care of my pup though. Any vets that read or if you work in a vets office, please consider this desperate need in Florence. Hopefully we can get our own emergency vet clinic soon.

After all– just LOOK at this dog! (Watch out. I kind of want to steal him.)

Y’all. It breaks my heart to get lost dog emails. It makes me want to hop in my car and go search for the pup myself. Niki is especially cute, and I think I would be tempted to keep her if I found her. However, Niki’s parents want her back. Please, PLEASE, let me know if you have seen Niki.
