I just read that Triple R Farms will be starting a Corn Maze right here in Florence on September 17, 2011.

Our corn maze is in the shape of a farm barn and will feature educational checkpoints that will focus on life on the farm and help you navigate the maze. In addition to our corn maze, we will have smaller wooden maze, a logic maze, a duck race game, a corn box, a scarecrow stuff station, hay rides, pumpkin patch, a concession stand, slides and picnic tables.

There is a lot more detail on their page about group rates, flashlight nights, and tickets. If you have never been to Triple R Farms on Hoffmeyer Road, you really should. Mr. Flossip and I bought a tree and some other assorted foliage there. They are super nice people, and I am excited about this new venture!!

This is SO great! Florence Pediatric Dentistry along with Miller Communications will be buying back your child’s Halloween Candy for $1.00 per pound for up to 3 pounds. They will send the candy (and I would assume some new toothbrushes) to our troops serving overseas.

Where: The Toy Shop at 2001 Hoffmeyer Road
When: November 1, 2010 from 3-6pm.

This means that you get a double win– your kids won’t eat two tons of candy and you get to brighten the day of troops overseas. Wait– third bonus! Your child gets up to three dollars to spend inside the Toy Shop and support a great local business! They have a whole display of small, inexpensive gadgets and toys that kids love.

Flossip is going to the fair this afternoon! A very kind person gave my family free tickets so we will go and check out the sights. I can’t actually remember the last time I went to the fair, but it has been a while. I lived in Columbia for five years or so and we always went to the state fair. I’m looking forward to a smaller crowd and an easier pace.

Mornings at the Museum

The Florence Museum is pleased to offer Mornings at the Museum, an interactive story time for children ages birth to four. These half hour sessions will take place the second Monday of each month starting in October. Mornings at the Museum will begin at 10:00 AM with each session to include a story, hands-on activity and exploration of objects directly relating to the museums permanent collection. This has been designed to engage young learners and foster a life long love and awareness of art, science and history.

Hear the delightful tale of three white mice and their adventures with color mixing. Early learners will be introduced to primary colors and how they are mixed to create secondary colors. Participants will tour the Pee Dee Regional Art Competition and identify primary and secondary colors.

I say you can have your candy and eat it too.

Let me explain… I have had alot of people asking me if Florence will be celebrating on Saturday the 30th or Sunday the 31st. I am not sure when Saturday became a default for a Sunday night Halloween but apparently at some point it did. I asked around and could not find an answer. Many thanks to Sheriff Kenney Boone for answering with the following:

“”The official date for Halloween this year falls on Sunday, October 31, 2010. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office as well as Florence County have no authority to regulate the day Halloween is observed and there is no ordinance stating such, but our officers will be out in force as usual to make our communities as safe as we can. Each community and residential area within the County has the right to decide for themselves which day they want their children to trick-or-treat, however, we suggest that everyone who chooses to do so, trick-or-treat on Saturday, the 30th. We just ask that everyone have a SAFE and happy Halloween!”

So, my recommendation is to do as the Sheriff says. Saturday night makes sense for a lot of reasons. The BONUS to trick or treating on Saturday night? You can go to Southside Baptist Church Fall Festival on Sunday night. I have heard about this for YEARS and we have just never made it. The festival is at South Florence and admission is One Bag of Individually Wrapped Candy. Everybody knows the Baptists know how to throw a fall festival. The festival is from 5-8 p.m. There will be burgers, hot dogs, and plenty of candy for the kids, inflatables, and games!

There is also a Fall Festival at Calvary Baptist Church on Cherokee Road -SUNDAY, OCT.31 from 6:00-8:00.There will be free food, balloons, fun, cakewalk, hayrides, and inflatables. (I told you the Baptists know how to throw a fall festival!)

Florence recommends that Halloween be recognized on Oct. 31 except for the years when the 31 is on Sunday at which time Halloween should be recognized on Saturday the 30

I think I may take my son to the Pee Dee Deer Classic. We are not a hunting family really, but it sounds like there are some things out there that he would have fun checking out. I know Mr. Flossip would enjoy it as well. Plus, its free for kids and it is inside. With Air Conditioning. Enough said. (I would probably go check out the wonderful world of knitting toilet seat covers if it meant I could stay inside today.)
