An Evening of Hope Cancer Benefit is tonight, and it has an all star cast of Flo-town famous people.

Our annual Cancer Benefit, An Evening of Hope, has been instrumental in funding many programs that impact the lives of our cancer patients. The McLeod Health Foundation has some very exciting plans and a new format for this year’s event. A special thank you to our Marquee Sponsor, Wells Fargo.

This year’s Twelfth Annual, An Evening of Hope Cancer Benefit, will showcase the plans for new Cancer Center with opening remarks by McLeod Oncologist Dr. Michael Pavy.

In addition, the event will include live performances by well known, regional artists who are cancer survivors or who have had a loved one impacted by cancer. Performers are: Peggy Baroody; Bill Mills; Tippi Harwell, Sallie Hackney, Celly Kahn, Arlene Boyd, Erma Tanner, Anna Rose Rainwater; Dr. Terry Roberts; Bill & Beverly Hazelwood; Kristin Slaughenhoupt, Roy Chipley, & Rocky Phipps; Shaw & Rebecca Thompson; Glen Gourley and Kelly Jokisch; Helen Lamm & Cam Melton; SFHS Choraliers Alumni; and Leon Rogers.

A silent auction will also be held featuring the talent of local artisans who are donating their works of art in honor or memory of a special friend or family member with a cancer diagnosis or their own battle with the disease. The date for this year’s event is Thursday, October 6, and it will be held in the beautiful, new Florence Little Theatre at 6 p.m. Wells Fargo has generously agreed to underwrite the event and Nucor Darlington is our Red Carpet Sponsor.

The super secret Flossip team of workers has decided upon a winner for the contest to have dinner with Flossip. The winner has elected to remain anonymous. She was very sweet in saying a lot of people would beg her to reveal my identity…I doubt they care but I understand her concern. I can however tell you that it was a very sweet entry– her husband donated to the American Heart Association and entered the contest for her. When I called her on the phone she had NO idea that he had entered her and she was so excited! I chatted with an employee of the Heart Association on twitter and she has agreed to go to the dinner and attest that it did take place. (You can also still donate through my link on the sidebar.)

I want to thank everyone that donated– publicly and anonymously. This is a cause very close to my own heart (heh!) as heart attack and strokes have affected members of my own family. You should all take the time to take the “Life’s Simple Seven” quiz on the heart association website. I made the decision to get healthy about 3 years ago– putting on my seat belt. It came to me all of a sudden that I do so many things to help insure I see my children grow up EXCEPT for taking proper care of myself. Seatbelts, buy a safe car, don’t skydive or hangglide. I hate to fly in airplanes– and yet statistically? My chances of having a heart attack are much higher than the chance of being killed by any of those things.
So, now? I run. I walk. I lift weights. I don’t eat fried food. I (try to) avoid sweets and an overindulgence in starches. I also support the Heart Association so that they can continue to do research and help people get heart healthy. The winner of the contest and her husband share in that mission as well, and I look forward to our dinner together. (I am totally ordering dessert though.)

The US Army Pathfinder Company of the 101st Airborne has been serving in Afghanistan since December last year. For those who know Joel and Connie, you know that Connie’s brother-in-law is the 1st SGT for the company. Some of us here in Florence have been supporting these guys with care packages since they left. He wants to do something special for his soldiers when they return this December and we want to help and want everyone to come join, have fun and help as well.

It’s almost that time of year again… yes it’s college football and cool weather but also the annual Florence Greek Festival!

It will be held Thursday September 24th through that Sunday the 26th at Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church. This is at 2990 S. Cashua Drive in Florence (across from Creek Ratz).

This is one of Florence’s oldest festivals and is a great time for the whole family! According to the event’s Facebook page there will be:

Ok, so I know it isn’t in Florence but this event is still for a great cause and is sure to be a great time!

The Darlington County Humane Society is hosting a 5K Walk/Run in Hartsville on Saturday August 29th at Byerly Park. According to the event’s Facebook page: “The second annual Bark at the Park race and fundraiser is gearing up for Aug. 29. Our goal is to raise money for The Darlington County Humane Society and help enable them to continue with much needed programs that provide medicines, vaccinations, vet care, spay/neutering, food, and improvements to the shelter.

This 5k run / walk will begin at 8am. Everyone is welcome including your pets! There will also be an adoption center on site with pets from the Humane Society.”

So bring the family (and the dogs!) and come over to Hartsville for a little exercise and a good cause!

Dear Friends:

Sandra Pringle lost her son in a trailer fire December 20, 2008. Since then she has had her three other children living with different relatives or friends. She had a church rent her a 2-bedroom apartment. Sandra has found a job and although she now has a place to stay she is still not able to have her other two sons stay with her as they do not have a bed. The room is small so they need bunk beds if at all possible.

Also, with the fall soon approaching the children & Sandra will need clothing.

Sandra lost her beloved son, Jammal and his buddy, his dog Ace.

If anyone in or around the Florence, Darlington, Timmonsville, Hartsville, SC area knows of anyone with bunk beds they’d be willing to donate, please let me know.

In the meantime I as Sandra realize times are tough for all, but if you could spare even a dollar, please mail it to help her build a bed & clothing fund for her children.
